Election related riots reportedly occurred on the eve of Senso Mungdang (Village community meeting) in Khar village of Mokokchung for the election scheduled to be held by March of 2023.
This occurred in the afternoon of 28 December between two intending candidates of 29 Jangpetkong Assembly Constituency and their supporters consequently resulting in the damages of private vehicles, property and physical injuries.
As per the reports, cartridges were also used in the riot and 20 to 25 people were reportedly injured. The injured were taken to Imkongliba Memorial hospital, Mokokchung.
Following the occurrence, Shashank Pratap Singh, IAS, District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner of the district issued an order prohibiting assembly of more than five persons and carrying of lethal weapons and firearms, including lathis, dagger/machete, spears, or any other sharp and dangerous weapons in the jurisdiction under section 144 CrPC (Code of Criminal procedure 1973).
Furthermore, in pursuance of section 21 of the Arms act 1951, all the arms licence holders in Khar village were directed for deposition of their firearms to the nearest police station.
