The Mokokchung Forest Division observed World Ozone Day on 13th September 2024 at Forest Office, Marepkong with teachers along with the students of Government Middle School Marepkong. Underscoring the vital role the ozone layer plays in sustaining life on Earth, the theme for this year’s World Ozone Day was “Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action”.

The ozone layer, a thin layer of ozone molecules in the stratosphere, serves as our planet’s protective shield, absorbing and blocking the majority of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This natural barrier is crucial in preventing the increase of UV radiation that can lead to severe health issues, such as skin cancer and cataracts, as well as adverse effects on wildlife and ecosystems.

Despite regulations, some regions still encounter issues with the illicit use of substances harmful to the ozone layer. On the occasion of World Ozone Day, the Mokokchung Forest division urged everyone to join environment warriors in reinforcing its commitment to a healthier planet. Small actions, such as using eco-friendly products, supporting sustainable practices, and staying informed about environmental issues, can collectively make a significant impact.

During the programme held at the Forest Office Marepkong, ‘Awareness of Ozone Layer and its Importance’ was presented with PowerPoint presentation by Tiatemsula Imchen, Fr-I who highlighted that protecting the earth from Ultraviolet rays and the causes for the depletion of ozone layer at the earth’s Stratosphere were the main highlights which causes, effects and solutions for protecting the ozone layers.

Limited use of vehicle, pesticides, Reuse & Recycle, Renewable uses of energy and more focus on plantation of trees were highlighted as the major solutions to tackle ozone layer depletion. Imchen encouraged the students to actively and consciously be responsible for protecting the environment and contribute in individual ways towards this common goal.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Aosungla Imsong, Fr.I. An introduction was held between the Forest officials, GMS Marepkong students and teachers which was followed by brief introduction on the celebration of World Ozone Day before the start of the programme.

A short virtual video was shown to the students for educational learning by Temsuwapang, Acct. Assistant. The students got the opportunity to experience Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality through 3D Virtual headsets and gadgets. This was followed by a quiz for the students based on Environment, Forest fires, Deforestations etc.

Importance of trees for plantation and different species of major trees available at Mokokchung District was highlighted by Talimeren Ao, Convergence Expert.

In conclusion, the celebration proved as a great stage for learning about the World Ozone Day and above all it was a successful and fruitful experience for all the attendees.
