The 2nd Inter-ward Volleyball Tournament 2023, organized by the Kumlong Sporting Association (KSA), is set to take place in Mokokchung Town. The tournament will be held at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex from 9th to 11th August 2023, with the theme “Forging Champions.” The Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA) is supporting the event.
During a press briefing, Dr Imlinichet Imchen, the convenor of the organizing committee, announced the prizes for the tournament. The champions will receive a cash prize of Rs. 30,000, while the runner-up will be awarded Rs. 20,000. There will also be individual awards for the Best Setter, Best Spiker, and Player of the Tournament.
The winning team will earn free entry to the Imchaba Master Memorial Nagaland Open Volleyball Trophy, a prestigious volleyball tournament in the state.
Dr Imchen also mentioned that the aim of the tournament is to promote amateur players of the town and who are residents of Mokokchung District.
A new addition to this year’s tournament is the “Super Spiker” event, where individual players from participating teams can compete without any entry fee. The winner of this event will receive a cash prize of Rs. 2000.
The Kumlong Sporting Association (KSA) was established in 2016 under the Kumlong Ward Yimden (Council) to oversee sports activities and promote young, aspiring athletes. The association has actively participated in various sports events within the Mokokchung District since its inception.
The Inter-ward Volleyball Tournament aims to be a unique event in Mokokchung Town, focusing on identifying and encouraging grassroots talent. It provides a platform for amateur volleyball athletes residing in the 18 wards of Mokokchung town. Sungkomen ward emerged as the champions in the previous edition of the tournament.
The KSA intends to make this tournament an annual event in the town and establish it as a running trophy, benefiting future generations. In addition to the exciting volleyball matches, the tournament promises a vibrant atmosphere with food stalls and various entertainment options to keep spectators engaged throughout the event. The matches will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis, adding to the suspense and competitiveness.
To participate in the tournament, teams must register by submitting the required forms along with a registration fee of Rs. 1500 per team. The technical team has also set a requirement that participants representing each ward must have been residents for a minimum of one year to be eligible for the tournament.
