Mokokchung District observed District Level World AIDS Day at the CMO Conference Hall today, focusing on the theme “Let Communities Lead.”

Dr. R. Toshimenla Jamir, DTO, and District Nodal Officer of DACO, highlighted the history of World AIDS Day, established in 1988 to raise awareness about the global pandemic. She emphasized the annual coordination of efforts by organizations worldwide, reflecting on the progress and challenges to achieve the goal of ending AIDS by 2030. Acknowledging AIDS as the last stage of HIV infection, she emphasized prevention, stating that while HIV is not curable, it is 100 percent  preventable.

This year marked the 35th commemoration of World AIDS Day, with an estimated 40 million global deaths from AIDS since 1981. Dr. Jamir mentioned that despite improvements, the AIDS epidemic still claims around 2 million lives annually, with over 2.5 lakh being children. She noted that 9.2 million globally lack access to needed HIV treatment, resulting in 1,700 lives lost daily from HIV-related causes.

Dr. Jamir stressed advancements in medicines and research but highlighted persistent stigma and misconceptions around HIV/AIDS. She urged global action to ensure HIV prevention, treatment, and support services, emphasizing the role of community-led organizations. Funding shortages, policy hurdles, and human rights issues hinder community leadership.

Limatongzuk, Program Manager at Care & Support Society, emphasized the significance of the day as a call to stop new infections, create awareness, support those infected, and remember those who passed away. He encouraged dedication to service and collaboration for a better future.

Tiayula, Program Manager at OVC, chaired the program, while Limawapang, Program Manager at Care Counseling Centre, delivered the invocation. The program included a special number, a candlelight vigil, and a vote of thanks by Makshi Jamir (DPO, DAPCU).
