With the community spirit and a commitment to better the lives of their fellow residents, the Alempang Ward Sanitation Committee has undertaken a remarkable road repair initiative to fix the dilapidated main stretch road leading to Alempang ward in Mokokchung Town. The chairman of the Sanitation Committee, Temjentoshi, announced the extensive project, spanning over 5 kilometers, which encompasses Dilong ward, Tongdentsuyong ward, and Alongmen ward, connecting these areas to Alempang ward.

The voluntary decision to repair the pothole-ridden road was rooted in the daily struggles faced by the people, particularly students, who traverse this route. Temjentoshi emphasized that the plight of their ward’s residents propelled them to take action.

Nokin Jamir, the General Secretary of the Sanitation Committee, shed light on the bureaucratic deadlock that led to this grassroots movement. The road maintenance by the PWD (Public Works Department) R&B (Roads and Bridges), was promised development five years ago. However, the government’s inaction prompted the Sanitation Committee to step in and address the grievances of the public through their independent efforts.

Crucially, the committee asserted that the entire project is self-funded, with all expenses covered by the Alempang Ward Sanitation Committee. Permission from the ward council was secured, and it is worth noting that no public donations were involved. The committee acknowledged the difficulties faced by the residents as the driving force behind this initiative.

The repair work commenced on August 30th and will continue until every pothole is eradicated. This extraordinary initiative sends a clear message that the government’s negligence in maintaining the road has compelled the community to take matters into their own hands.

Addressing the financial aspect of the project, the Alempang Ward Sanitation Committee disclosed that an approximate sum of 1 lakh rupees will be invested. This amount will cover expenses related to boulders, earthing materials like soil and stones, and transportation, including the pickup for loading. Notably, the labor for the repair work will be a collaborative effort, involving members of the committee and well-wishers.
