Mon: First Open Badminton tournament of Konyak Aoleang commences

Mon: Aoleang festival is celebrated to mark the end of the year and invoke God’s blessing for the New year.

The 1st Open Badminton Tournament of Aoleang, organised by Mon District Badminton Association (MDBA) and Officers’ Club Mon, began at Badminton Stadium Mon on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner Mon, Ajit Kumar Verma IAS, in his speech as the special guest of the inaugural function, expressed gratitude to the pioneers who first laid their ideas of the game at Mon and thanked the MDBA and Officers’ Club for organising the tournament, a DIPR report stated.

He said every festival is linked to the economic life of the society. Some celebrate post-harvest and others pre-cultivation, marking the beginning of the session. Likewise, the Aoleang festival too is celebrated to mark the end of the year and invoke God’s blessing for the New year, the DC added.

He encouraged the youngsters that youth and sports are complementary to each other and urged them to enjoy, expose themselves and develop while playing.

Delivering the keynote address, Er. Tingten Konyak said badminton is one of the best games, where there is no age limitation.

It also helps in developing health and the mind, he said, adding that winning and losing are part of the game and that participation is very important.

He encouraged the players to take such tournaments as an opportunity to get exposure and play with discipline and improve themselves.

Meanwhile, giving the welcome note, Y Rongba, President of MDBA, thanked the DC Mon for giving the idea to organise 1st Open Badminton Tournament of Aoleang.

He said that the Aoleang Monyu is the greatest festival and is as old as the people of Konyak Naga. Today it is celebrated to remind the people of their own cultures, customs, traditions, and other practices so that the youngsters may keep on learning in the context of modern society, he added.
