The Department of History, Mount Tiyi College organized an educational study tour to Khonoma Village on March 28, 2026, aimed at providing students with first-hand exposure to the rich historical heritage of Nagaland.
A total of 31 students participated in the tour, which was led by Associate Professor, Dr Libemo Kithan and Assistant Professor, Dr Bokali Shohe, who supervised the activities throughout the visit.
Khonoma holds a significant place in Naga history for its strong tradition of resistance and its unique indigenous socio-political system. The village is widely remembered for its resistance against British colonial expansion during the Anglo-Naga War, symbolizing the courage, unity and strategic acumen of the Naga people.
One of the key highlights of the tour was the visit to the historic forts of Khonoma. Strategically constructed on elevated ridges, these forts were used by villagers to defend their territory during conflicts, particularly against British forces. Built using stones, earth and wooden barricades, the forts stand as testimony to the remarkable military organisation and ingenuity of the Khonoma warriors. Students gained valuable insights into how geography and community cooperation played a crucial role in shaping local history.

The group also explored the traditional Morung, which served as a communal dormitory and learning centre in Naga villages. The Morung functioned as an important institution where young men were trained in warfare skills, cultural values and moral discipline, while also preserving oral traditions, folklore and customs passed down by elders.
The study tour provided students with an opportunity to connect classroom learning with real historical landscapes, enhancing their understanding of indigenous heritage and history. The department stated that such field visits are essential in making academic learning more engaging and meaningful.
Overall, the tour was described as a highly educational and enriching experience, successfully fulfilling its objective of offering practical exposure to Nagaland’s historical legacy.
