S. Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) has appealed the Government of India for accreditation and upgradation of Kohima Medical College, informed a press release issued by the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee.
Jamir has strongly urged the Government of India to consider the accreditation and upgradation of Kohima Medical College into a premier Central Institute on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) or the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. Highlighting the significance of Kohima Medical College as the first-ever medical college in Nagaland, which commenced operations in September 2023 with an intake capacity of 100 students, the MP emphasized that the institution represents a historic milestone in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the state.
He stated that despite this progress, there remains a pressing need for enhanced institutional capacity, advanced medical facilities, and increased academic and research opportunities.

Upgrading the college to the level of AIIMS or accrediting it as a Central Institute would not only improve healthcare delivery in Nagaland but also benefit the entire North Eastern region, viewed the MP. Jamir further pointed out that such an initiative will help address the shortage of specialized healthcare services, reduce dependency on other states for advanced treatment, and create opportunities for local youth in medical education and employment.
He called upon the Central Government to take immediate and positive steps toward granting central institute status or AIIMS-level upgradation to Medical Science and Research (NIMSR) , thereby ensuring equitable healthcare development and fulfilling the long-standing aspirations of the people of Nagaland.
