A day after the assault case of two Rongmei women was settled by customary laws where the accused agreed to pay a sum of 20 lakh to the victims, the Naga Peoples’ Union Imphal (NPUl) has submitted a memorandum to Manipur Chief Minister to take immediate action against the assailants.
NPUI condemned the incident where Jangaina and Ritalu Dangmei were attacked at the Bishnupur Community Hall on 8th December 2023. The women were reportedly pick from Macha Ibemma on 8th December 2023 at Bishnupur and detained at Ningthoukhong Bazar. Later, they were handed over to Bishnupur Meira Paibi, who then handed them to some youths of Bishnupur who physically and mentally tortured and beat the women.
It also highlighted an incident where three persons belonging to the Tangkhul community from Ukhrul district “were beaten blue and black by suspected miscreants” in Lamlai after the vehicle they were travelling in was stopped by the Meira Paibis.
On 11th December 2023, the Rongmei Naga Council Manipur – Ntayphay Luangrian (RNCM- NTL) and leaders of Lamadong Apunba Nupi Lup and Bishnupur Youth Citizen forum “amicably” settled the assault case of Jangaina Dangmei, Warden of Loyala School in Manipur, and her sister Ritalu Dangmei by customary laws at Chuangphun Village, Kangpokpi District. At the meeting, the assailants confessed to their crimes and tendered apology in public.
The parties agreed on several points to avoid any untoward incident in the future including that Lourembam Kennedy place five hands span of pig as a customary practice to avoid further altercation. The culprits pay Rs 20 lakh as a penalty for assault and physical harassment to the victims on or before 16th December 2023.
It was also agreed that the valley based civil bodies must stop and avoid frisking the Rongmei Naga people in Bishnupur district for communal harmony and peaceful co-existence between the two communities.
