Nagaland celebrates International Day of Older Persons 2025

The International Day of Older Persons 2025 was observed in different districts in Nagaland on the theme “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Right” on October 1.

The state-level observation of the International Day of Older Persons 2025 and commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the Senior Citizens’ Association of Nagaland (SCAN) was held at the Capital Convention Centre, Kohima.

Special guest of the programme, advisor Social Welfare Wangpang Konyak in his address said the day is not just a celebration, but also a reminder of the invaluable roles played by our elders in the fabric of our Naga society.

He stated that the theme for this year, “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-being, Our Rights,” resonates deeply with the spirit of Nagaland since senior citizens are the pillars of the culture, carrying the rich traditions, stories, and wisdom of the tribes. He urged upon all to keep sharing the vision as experiences light the path for the future generations and the stories of senior citizens serve as mentors, caregivers and community leaders inspire the younger generation to be resilient and to remain motivated.

The legislator also added that well-being is equally critical therefore he reassured them that the government is committed to a better support system, improved medical facilities through CMHIS and through social assistance schemes.

Konyak stated that on a global stage, Nagaland’s unique blend of traditions and resilience can be a model for the world, showing how older persons can lead change in the community and as 25 years of SCAN is marked, reflecting on the milestones achieved and the work ahead so as to build a Nagaland where every senior citizen is honored, supported, and empowered.

He further urged everyone to advocate strongly for the rights and well-being of the elders, and to work together to create a world where ageing is celebrated and every person can live with dignity and purpose.

Secretary Social Welfare Limawabang Jamir in his keynote address said that the theme reminded him of the essential role that older individuals play in shaping the world.

He maintained that the day is not just about recognising the challenges faced by older persons but also celebrating their contributions to society, their wisdom, and their invaluable experiences. He mentioned that on this day it was important to raise voices to shed light on the issues affecting older individuals, to promote their rights, and to ensure that their well-being remains a priority.

The official stated that the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has been working tirelessly to create an inclusive and equitable society. With the establishment of 12 Senior Citizens Homes across the state, funded by the ministry and implemented by various NGOs, the department is ensuring that senior citizens have a safe place where they can receive care, love, and respect, he highlighted.

Additionally, he said the department has also implemented schemes like Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY), under which cataract surgeries are conducted and training of geriatric caregivers is imparted, serving as essential tools to improve the quality of life for the elderly. Awareness campaigns are also organised to ensure that society remains informed about the challenges and rights of older individuals. Through initiatives like the IGNOAP scheme, he said financial assistance is provided to senior citizens from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, ensuring they have the support they need to live with dignity.

Meanwhile, the ‘Distinguished Senior Citizen Award’ was presented to Neidonuo Angami and Rev. Dr L. Anjo Keikung for their outstanding contribution towards society and the State.

Wokha: The International Day of Older Persons was observed in Wokha district on October 1 at VDB Hall, organised by the department of Social Welfare in collaboration with the Senior Citizen Association Wokha.

Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Wokha, Sangmou Khiamniungan who attended as the special guest acknowledged the foundational contributions of senior citizens that have enabled younger generations to enjoy improved lifestyles. He spoke of their sacrifices across many aspects of life which opened opportunities for change and modern facilities, and expressed gratitude for their role in bridging developmental gaps. He also addressed the issue of drug and alcohol addiction, stating that senior citizens can play a vital role in fostering positive change for future generations.

Sharing on the theme, vice principal of Mount Tiyi College, Dr. Khyopenthung Tsopoe, described senior citizens as carriers of wisdom and knowledge, and encouraged them to continue contributing to societal development. He cited examples of global personalities who have acted as sources of inspiration in growth, development, and leadership.

District awards were presented to Rev. M Wosumo Humtsoe and Anymro Lotha in recognition of their contributions.

O Orhyumomo Lotha, speaking on behalf of the senior citizens, expressed gratitude and gave a brief account of the formation of the Senior Citizens Association Wokha, outlining its objectives.

Earlier, District Welfare Officer C James Ezung, delivered the welcome and introductory remarks. The programme was chaired by N Renchio.

Shamator: Social Welfare department Shamator observed its first-ever International Day of Older Persons on 1st October 2025 at Cultural Hall, Shamator under the Theme: “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Well Being, Our Rights”.

District Programme Officer Renchano Odyuo gave a welcome and keynote address.

Meanwhile, the Distinguished Senior Citizen Award was presented to Rev. A Thrunso Yimchunger and T Youngkila Yimchunger for their outstanding contribution to the district and the society.

Theme speaker Mekato J Aye expressed gratitude towards the department for organising such a program to elevate and recognise our senior citizens. He also thanked all the senior citizens of Shamator for being more responsible by contributing wisdom in building up the town.
