Nagaland elections: Violence reported at Akuk village in Wokha, candidates claim situation peaceful

Wokha: Huge turnout was reported in the first half of polling in all polling stations in the district

Violence was reported in Wokha district in the first hour since polling commenced on Monday in Nagaland. Electorates in the state are voting today to elect 59 representatives to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

The incident reportedly took place at Akuk village, 40 Bhandari A/C in Wokha where around four people were said to had been injured when miscreants opened fire in an attempt to allegedly capture the booth.

In a video received by Nagaland Tribune, a man is seen to have been shot in the hand while another is shown with injury to the thigh. The injured appeared to being taken to the hospital.

Naga People’s Front secretary general and candidate of 40 Bhandari A/C, Achumbemo Kikon, was optimistic after casting his vote. He said that he was hopeful that people will support him and assured peaceful polling in the constituency.

Kikon while appealing the people of Nagaland to cast their votes peacefully said, “together we will make a new Nagaland”.

Y.Mhonbemo Humstoe, National Congress Party candidate of 38 Wokha A/C, exuded confidence while declaring that out of 60 polling stations in the constituency, he was hopeful of securing majority votes in 52. Asked about the challenges he has faced so far in this election, Humtsoe told Nagaland Tribune that apart from a few incidences “here and there”, there has not been any “major challenge” since the people are behind him.

“We are hopeful to be the kingmakers,” the NCP candidate declared when asked about his prospects in the new government if elected.

Sources have also reported stone pelting at Polling Station 14, which is at Forest Colony, under 38 Wokha A/C. This news is however unconfirmed at the moment.

BJP candidate for 37 Tyui A/C and Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland, Yanthugo Patton, after casting his vote affirmed that there was no problem in his constituency.

His opponent, Janata Dal (United)’s Senchumo (NSN) Lotha was also pictured after he cast his vote.
