Nagaland: First ULB election with women reservation on 16 May

Kohima: Chairperson of Dimapur Municipal Council, 12 town councils reserved for women; Model Code of Conduct in force with immediate effect.

The much-anticipated general election to the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) comprising of three municipal councils and 36 town councils in Nagaland will be held on 16 May with 33% reservation for women for the first time.

This was informed in a notification on 9 March by the State Election Commissioner, T Mhabemo Yanthan.

The electoral rolls for the ensuing election to the municipal and town councils have been prepared with 1 January 2022 as the qualifying date and published on 24 November 2022.

The notification further stated that compulsory identification of the voters will be made, for which, separate instructions will be issued.

The Model Code of Conduct has also come into force with immediate effect and will be applicable to candidates, political parties in the state, and government machinery.

Out of the total 39 municipal and town councils, the chairperson of Dimapur Municipal Council has been reserved for women, while the chairpersons of Atoizu Town Council, Chiephobozou Town Council, Kiphire Town Council, Longleng Town Council, Meluri Town Council, Naginimora Town Council, Peren Town Council, Pungro Town Council, Shamator Town Council, Tizit Town Council, Tuensang Town Council and Zunheboto Town Council has been reserved for women.

It may be mentioned that in 2017 when the Nagaland government had announced that ULB election with 33 percent reservation for women would be held, it was opposed tooth and nail by several groups.

It resulted in violence where two persons were killed, while TR Zeliang was forced to step down as the chief minister.
