Kohima: Govt spokesperson hints at introducing new NMA bill

Nagaland Minister for Power and Government Spokesperson K.G. Kenye said that the State government will pass a resolution in the upcoming Assembly session to fully repeal the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act, 2023.

“…maybe the principal act itself not only the latest Amendment. So we will be discussing this things in the consultative meeting first,” added Kenye.

He said this while speaking to a section of reporters on the sideline of a program on Tuesday, in Kohima.

The government spokesperson also hinted that the new bill for Nagaland Municipal Act will be tabled in the upcoming Assembly session.

Speaking on the ongoing talks between the Government of India and NSCN-IM, Kenye said any group engaging in talks always have their best wishes and likewise even this time it is no different.

He said it is too early to comment anything as it cannot pre-act any solution or declaration because it will be assessed and then the opinion of the general public will be important.

With regard to Oil exploration in Nagaland which has been opposed by many, Kenye maintained that a line has to be drawn and said that earlier when both sides Assam and Nagaland tried to venture into the disturbed areas, it was objected and resisted by the people, so that has been kept on. However, he said the undisputed areas, that is the bureaucracy of the Government and exuded hope that after having consultation with the stakeholders, it should be ok.

Meanwhile, regarding the 1 September consultative meeting Kenye said the house will be discussing on Urban Local Body (ULB), Uniform Civil Conduct (UCC) and Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act and other issues as well.

Mention may be made that the second session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly will commence on 11 September.
