Nagaland legislator Noke Wangnao no more; CM Rio bids farewell to “pillar of strength and a source of inspiration”

Kohima: Veteran politician elected to NLA nine times from Mon’s Tapi Assembly constituency

Noke Wagnao, Nagaland Advisor for Social Welfare, passed away today at Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research, Dimapur. The senior most legislator in the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly was 89 years old.

The veteran politician was elected to the NLA ten times from the Tapi Assembly constituency under Mon district in 1974, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1989, 1998, 2003, 2013, 2018 and earlier this year.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, in his condolence message mourned the death of “Atei Noke Wangnao” who he said was not only a colleague but also “a dear friend, a trusted advisor, an elder brother” he looked up to. Rio remembered “Baba Noke” as a “staunch regionalist, a principled leader, a true people’s representative and someone who never compromised his principles come what may.” He also said that Noke’s political record speaks volume of his “popularity, his deep-rooted connection with the masses, and the trust that was placed upon him by the people.”

In his emotional tribute, CM wrote, “My dear friend and colleague stood by my side through the good and bad days of our political journey, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and steadfast dedication. His commitment to our common cause was an embodiment of true friendship and partnership. He was not just a supporter, but a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration for all of us. We came together not just as colleagues, but as a family united by shared values, aspirations, and a journey that spanned decades. In an ever-changing political arena, finding someone who remains steadfast in their loyalty and support is a rare and precious gift. His dedication was not just a reflection of his commitment to our shared vision, but a testament to his character, integrity, and the values he held dear.”

Further, Rio said that Noke’s wisdom, leadership and guidance will be missed by not only the people of the eastern region and the Konyak community but also whole State. The CM conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton in his tribute said, “His unwavering dedication to the well-being of the people and unyielding commitment to bettering our State will stand as a lasting legacy.” He also comforted the loved ones of late Noke Wangnao on X.

Fellow Deputy Chief Minister T R Zeliang too expressed sadness the demise of the senior legislator on the microblogging site.

“A man of few words and filled with virtue of humility, his demise is a huge loss for the people of the State. Extending my sincere condolences to the bereaved family. May the departed soul Rest in Peace,” Zeliang wrote.
