The 77th Independence Day of India resonated with patriotic fervour across Nagaland, witnessed in grand celebrations held in various districts.
Led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in the state level Independence Day program held in state capital Kohima, the significant Drug-Free Nagaland pledge was administered in all the programs in the districts and sub-divisions.
Tuensang
Tuensang District observed the Independence Day at Parade Ground, Tuensang with P. Bashangmongba Chang, Minister of PWD (Housing & Mechanical) hoisting the National Flag and taking of Rashtriya Salute,
The parade commander was Petovi, Assistant Commandant 3rd Nap, Tuensang and Parade 2nd-in-Command was Imti Chang, ABSI Tuensang. The 12 March Past contingents were from DEF Tuensang, 3rd Nap Tuensang, Village Guards Tuensang Village, Village Guards Ngangpong Village, Ex-servicemen, NCC, St. John’s HSS, GHSS Thangjam, Bharat Scouts and Guides Tuensang, Akum Imlong School, St. Joseph School, Bethesda School and 3rd Nap Pipe Band.
The District Commendation Award was presented to the awardees on the occasion. This was followed up by cultural presentations.
The MLA also inaugurated the exhibition stalls as well the CCTV installation at Tuensang Police Station. Further special Guest along with some dignitary visited institutions and hospitals.
The celebration come to an end with football exhibition match at Loyem Memorial Astro Turf which was played between DC XI vs TCCI in first match and between CWS vs DEF Tuensang in the second match.

Mokokchung
The Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung reverberated with zeal as Salhoutuonuo Kruse, Minister for Women Resources Development & Horticulture, Government of Nagaland, presided as the special guest, DIPR informed.
Delivering an inspiring Independence Day speech, Kruse hoisted the National Flag and oversaw the Rashtriya Salute rendered by eleven parade contingents. The event was enriched by captivating cultural dances and pipe band displays, resonating a pledge for a Drug-Free Nagaland. The occasion also celebrated exceptional dedication, honouring recipients of the District Commendation Award for Meritorious Service.
Longleng
The Public Playground in Longleng radiated pride as A. Pongshi Phom, MLA, graced the event as the special guest. According to DIPR, an impassioned Independence Day speech was followed by the unfurling of the National Flag and a vibrant Rashtriya Salute from seven parade contingents. District Commendation Awards recognized those who contributed significantly to community welfare.
Mon
The Local Ground in Mon Town was adorned with fervour as K.G Kenye, Minister of Power and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Nagaland, graced the occasion. The Minister unfurled the Tricolour, reviewed the parade, and administered a pledge for a drug-free Nagaland. The parade showcased various contingents, including NAP Tizit, DEF Mon, and more, led by Parade Commander Assistant Commandant K Hekato Sumi.
Peren
The Peren District New Head Quarter hosted the celebrations with P. Paiwang Konyak, Minister for Health & Family Welfare, hoisting the national flag. The event included spirited march pasts by schools, colleges, and security forces. National flags were also hoisted across offices and residences throughout the district.
Zunheboto
Jacob Zhimomi, Minister of Public Health Engineering & Cooperation, presided over Zunheboto’s festivities. The Chief Guest hoisted the National Flag, inspected the parade, and delivered the Independence Day speech. Cultural presentations and district commendation awards added vibrancy to the celebration.
Dimapur
The DDSC Stadium in Dimapur witnessed the Tricolor unfurled by Hekani Jakhalu, Advisor of Industries and Commerce department. The event marked the inauguration of CCTV installations at Police Stations and showcased exhibition stalls from various government departments and organizations.
Phek
Advisor CAWD and Taxes, Kudecho Khamo, graced Phek Town’s celebration. Khamo administered a pledge for a drug-free Nagaland, emphasizing the importance of eradicating substance abuse. Exhibition stalls, a captivating warrior folk dance, and a football exhibition match added energy to the festivities.
Tseminyu
The RSA Ground in Tseminyu brimmed with life as MLA Ar. Jwenga Seb led the celebration. A pledge for a drug-free Nagaland resonated along with cultural performances and the inauguration of exhibition stalls and CCTV systems.
Chumoukedima
Chumoukedima Town Public ground hosted vibrant celebrations with Metsubo Jamir, Minister of Rural Development & SIRD, as the Special Guest. Cultural performances, folk songs, and dances enriched the celebration’s cultural fabric.
Niuland
Zhaleo Rio, Advisor for Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, hoisted the National Flag at Niuland Public Ground. District commendation certificates were presented, and exhibition stalls highlighted various initiatives.
Shamator
Shamator Town Public Ground buzzed with enthusiasm as Dr. Tsielhoutuo Rhutso, MLA, hosted the celebration. A pledge for a Drug-Free Nagaland resonated, along with cultural performances and the inauguration of exhibition stalls and CCTV cameras.
Pughoboto
Dr Sukhato A. Sema, MLA, marked Pughoboto’s celebration by administering a pledge for a drug-free Nagaland. Exhibition stalls and CCTV installations further reinforced law and order measures.
Wakching
Wakching Headquarters celebrated Independence Day with James Renbi Kikon, SDO (Civil), hoisting the national flag and receiving the salute from Nagaland Police Wakching.
Longkhim
H. Sethrongkyu, Advisor for IT & Communication, Economics & Statistics, and Evolution, led the celebration in Longkhim, emphasizing a drug-free Nagaland.
Chozuba
Imkongmar, Advisor of Minority Affairs and Sericulture, celebrated Independence Day at Chozuba’s local ground. The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign was launched earlier in sync with the nation’s celebration.
These vibrant celebrations underscored Nagaland’s spirit of unity, patriotism, and commitment to a drug-free future.
Shamator Battalion, Noklak
Shamator Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (North) on the occasion of 77th Independence Day organised flag hoisting, felicitation of veterans and Veer Naris for celebrating “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” for schools and veterans of Noklak Town.
Earlier, a Drawing competition was conducted on the eve of I-Day where 119 students from Holy Angel School, St. Paul School, Government Higher Secondary School and Christian High School participated.
Chauhan, Officer Commandant said that this event helped in spreading an important message to young students who attended the program that freedom was achieved by the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and the martyrs who have laid their lives for better future.
This project has immensely contributed towards winning the hearts and minds of the people and thereby instilling and enhancing the image of Security Forces, stated the organisers.
Jalukie Town
Jalukie Town commemorated the 77th Independence Day at GHSS Ground with Tovihoto Ayemi, Advisor for Tribal Affairs and Election, Government of Nagaland, hoisting the National Flag and receiving the Rashtriya Salute from parade contingents. The National Anthem was performed by students from St. Xavier’s College, Jalukie. The day featured the participation of five schools in the march past, along with cultural displays, special numbers, and pledges on Drug-Free Nagaland. The event concluded with the beating of the retreat by DEF Jalukie in the evening.
Akuluto
Independence Day was celebrated at the ADC headquarters in Akuluto, under Zunheboto District. T.N. Manen, IAS (Retd), Advisor for Land Revenue, Law, and Justice, Government of Nagaland, hoisted the tricolor, followed by the National Anthem. The parade contingents consisted of 8th NAP F. Coy Akuluto, NCC units from GHS Akuluto (boys and girls), Hillto Children Home School, Royal High School Akuluto, and St. Clare High School Akuluto.
The program was enhanced by cultural presentations, including folk songs from STH Akuluto, patriotic dances by JNV Zunheboto students, and a captivating patriotic dance by St. Clare High School Akuluto. Notably, Hillto Children Home School presented an exceptional cultural dance representing the Sumi Naga culture.
Atoizu
Atoizu subdivision celebrated the Independence Day along with the nation. MLA Imtichoba presided as the chief guest for the event. The day’s festivities commenced with the hosting of the national flag by the chief guest, followed by parade inspection and the Independence Day speech. The march past consisted of four contingents.
Cultural elements enhanced the program, including a special song by KPA students, women folk song by STH Atoizu, and a men folk dance by Naghuto old village. The chief guest also inaugurated the CCTVs at Atoizu police station.
Medziphema
Independence Day was celebrated at the Local Ground in Medziphema Town, Sub-Division. Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Advisor for School Education and SCERT, unfurled the National Flag upon his arrival and took the Rashtriya Salute.
The National Anthem was sung by students of SFS Higher Secondary School, Medziphema. The parade contingents were then inspected by the Advisor, followed by the Independence Day speech. Eight contingents participated in the March Past, led by Parade Commander Arenla Jamir, ABI NAPTC Chumukedima and Second in Command Imlamongba, ABSI Commissioner of Police Dimapur.
The participating contingents included NAPTC Chumukedima, GHSS Medziphema, King David Hr. Sec School Medziphema, Chakhro Baptist Mission School Medziphema, NCC (Girls) SFS Hr Sec. School, SFS Hr Sec School, Modern Christian School, and Rivenburg School with Pipe Band from SFS Higher Secondary School Medziphema.
The celebration featured a cultural presentation by Medziphema Village Council. The event also included the inspection of a flower stall by the Advisor installed by Medziphema locals. Awards for the best contingent in the March Pass/Parade were given to SFS Higher Secondary School and King David Higher Secondary School Medziphema.
The celebration saw the attendance of around 1500 people, including government servants, GBs (Gaon Buras), NGOs, public leaders, students, and the general public. The program concluded with the traditional beating of retreat ceremony.
Satakha
Satakha sub-division joined the nation in celebrating the 77th Independence Day with MLA A. Nyamnyei Konyak as the special guest.
The program started with the arrival and hoisting of the national flag by the special guest, followed by parade inspection and an Independence Day speech. This was followed by a march past by six contingents. The event also featured a special song by Kahili, a tug of war competition, and cultural presentations by A Khel womenfolks. The chief guest also inaugurated exhibition stalls and the CCTV installation at Satakha police station.
Aghunato
Aghunato subdivision marked the 77th Independence Day with G. Ikuto Zhimo, Advisor for Land Resource, as the special guest. The event began with the hoisting of the national flag by the Advisor, followed by parade inspection, an Independence Day speech, and a march past by six contingents. The program also featured cultural presentations and entertainment by seven different schools.
Aboi
Aboi Hq celebrated Independence Day at the public ground in Aboi. The special guest for the occasion was Manpon Konyak, MLA of the 47th Assembly Constituency, Aboi. He hoisted the National Flag and delivered the Independence Day speech. He took the National Salute from eleven contingents: 11th NAP (IR) Bn Aboi, Langmeang Village Guard, GHSS NCC contingent, GHSS Students, Wangka High School, St. John School, Longshang Memorial High School, Emmanuel High School (Boys), Emmanuel High School (Girls), Paramount High School and Government Middle School (GMS)
The parade was reviewed by Kumtsu Yimchunger, NPS, Adjutant 11th (NAP) IR Bn, Aboi. The National Anthem was sung by St. John Higher Secondary School, and there was a special performance by Government Polytechnic Aboi, as well as a choreography by Longshang Memorial High School. Cultural folk songs were presented along with Folk Dance.
The event also included the inauguration of stalls organized by various departments under the surveillance of the newly installed CCTV from the police station in Aboi. The celebration drew a large crowd, consisting of various Government Departments, NGOs, and the public from the village and its surrounding areas.
THONOKNYU
Independence Day celebration was held at Thonoknyu SDO Civil office campus. Rastriya Salute and National Anthem by Nagaland police and Government High School Thonoknyu. SDO Civil Tsiatsusie read the Independence Day speech and also adminstered the Drug-free pledge.
Bhandari
The Independence Day was celebrated at Bhandari with Achumbemo Kikon MLA 50 A/C as special guest at the Bhandari Public ground.
He unfurled the National Flag, took Salute from the parade contingents and led the Pledge taking for Drug-Free Nagaland.
The National anthem was sung by students of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Bhandari. The special guest read out the Independence Day speech.
7th NAP Batallion, DBHSS Bhandari, NCC GHSS Bhandari, DBS class 12 students and 7th NAP unit School were the parade contingents led by ABSI M. Eshothung.
Highlights of the day’s programme included folk song presentation by Akuk Ekhung Bhandari town, Special song presentation by Elvis O. Yanthan, folk song presentation by Eloe Hoho Bhandari and self defence demonstration by girls from GHSS Bhandari.
Later in the programme the special guest inaugurated stalls put up by Agricultural department, Medical Department, Sub Divisional Industries (SDIC) Bhandari, Lotha Lower Range Baptist Churches women groups and various Self-Help groups from Bhandari sub division.
Tamlu
The Tamlu sub-division celebrated 77th Indian Independence Day on 15th August 2023 at Public Playground Tamlu with MLA, B. Bangtick Phom as special guest. He unfurled the National Flag and took Rashtriya salute from parade contingents comprising of Village Guard Tamlu Village, Village Guard Tamlu town, St. Thomas School Tamlu Boys, St. Thomas School Tamlu Girls, Christian School Tamlu Boys, Christian School Tamlu Girls and followed by reading of Independence Day speech. Later he inaugurated CCTV at Police Station, Tamlu.

Meluri
With the rest of the country, the 77th Independence Day was celebrated at Meluri local ground with Advisor New & Renewable Energy & NSDMA Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe as the chief guest. The chief guest unfurled the National Flag followed by National Anthem recited by Government higher secondary School Meluri. The chief guest delivered the Independence Day speech and administered the Drug-Free Nagaland pledge to all the gatherings. He also took Rashtriya Salute comprising of the VGs of Akhegwo, VGs pipe band Meluri, Government Hr. Sec. School, Meluri, Christian Hr. Sec. School, NCC girls of Christian Hr. Sec. School Meluri, St. Xavier Hr. Sec.School Meluri and NCC girls of St. Xavier Hr Sec. School, Meluri.
The parade was led by ABSI, Jonny Chakhesang F’Coy, 5th NAP Meluri and Hav Pongrhong Konyak F’Coy 5th NAP Meluri as the first and second commander of the parade contingents.
The highlight of the day includes folk Dance by Riehuope village cultural troupe (women) and cultural fusion by Christian Hr. Sec. School, Meluri. The Chief Guest also inaugurated CCTV at police station Meluri and exhibition stall displayed by Agri and Allied department, Forest Department, St. Xavier Hr. Sec. School, Meluri, Disabled people organization and NSRLM, Meluri block.
Around five thousand people witness the celebration, including all the Government employees, students and public of Meluri Town.
Naginimora
Independence Day was commemorated with grandeur at Naginimora Hq. The Tricolour was hoisted by W. Chingang Konyak, Advisor for DUDA & Geology & Mining. The event saw the singing of the National Anthem and an Independence Day speech delivered by Advisor Konyak. The occasion was graced by the salute of six contingents. The celebration was highlighted by captivating performances, including a cultural dance by KNSK Naginimora Unit, Kho Kho sport demonstration by Ayo Memorial School, a special item display by ARPS Students, and a Tug of War competition, organized ward-wise, within Naginimora Town.
Pungro
The town of Pungro and its surroundings joined commemorated Independence Day at the Public Ground in Pungro. The special guest for the occasion was S. Kiusumew Yimchunger, Advisor for Fire & Emergency Services, Home Guards & Civil Defence, and Relief & Rehabilitation. The special guest hoisted the National Flag and received the Rastriya Salute, followed by parade contingents and a meaningful speech for the 77th year of Independence. The event further featured exhibitions by various NGOs/SHGs and government departments, and certificates of merit were awarded to distinguished individuals. Notable participants included NVG Pungro village, GHSS Pungro, LFS Pungro, Christian School Pungro, ASMS Pungro, MHBS Pungro, GMS Pungro town, NVG Band Party Zhimkiur village, among others. The celebration embraced cultural performances, including a patriotic song by Pungro Village Women Cultural Troupe and Taekwondo demonstrations. The special guest inaugurated CCTV installation at Pungro Police Station. An exhibition football match between civil societies and government service XI capped off the Day’s celebrations. Celebration concluded with the beating of retreat by 8th NAP Pungro.
Mangkolemba
Independence Day was celebrated at the Public Ground in Mangkolemba with fervour and patriotism. The event saw the presence of Temjenmenba, Advisor for Transport and Technical Education in the Government of Nagaland, as the special guest. The National Flag was hoisted by the Advisor, followed by the inspection of parade contingents. Notable participants included E Coy 2nd NAP Tzutapela, Govt. Higher Secondary School Mangkolemba, Baptist Higher Secondary School Mangkolemba, and St. Andrews School Mangkolemba. The special guest delivered the Independence Day speech. The day was marked by cultural presentations by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Longnak, and St. Andrews School Mangkolemba. The inauguration of exhibition stalls by the Special Guest was a highlight of the festivities.
Chiephobozou
The 77th Indian Independence Day was celebrated at Cheiphobozou Local Ground on 15th August 2023 with Er. Picto Shohe, MLA who unfurled the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute from the Parade Contingents comprised of 10th IRB Zadima, Ex- Servicemen Chiechama, GHSS Chiechama, GHS Nerhema Model and, DBS Chiephobozuo (boys and girls).
Cultural presentations were performed by Zadima Village Council and Merima Village Council. While DIET Chiechama and College of Arts & Technology, Nerhe Phezha gave the special presentation. The personnel from Fire Station, Chiephobozuo gave the demonstration on how to extinguish fire and its safety measures. The MLA also inaugurated the exhibition stall.
Tizit
Independence Day was celebrated in Tizit with great enthusiasm and pride. Tongpang Ozukum, Advisor for Water Resources, was the special guest for the occasion. He hoisted the National Flag and took the Salute from 14 parade contingents, led by ABI Agoak as the parade commander. Ozukum delivered the Independence Day speech at the Local Ground, Tizit. The celebration featured a Patriotic Song by Hope Plant School, Tizit, as well as Patriotic dances by Don Bosco School Tizit and Hope Plant School. A special moment was the felicitation of “Veeron Ka Vandan” by the special guest, paying tribute to the sacrifice of Rifleman late NK Konyak, 46AR, who bravely served the nation. The program also included a sweet distribution by CDPO Tizit. The event concluded with the inauguration of CCTV installation at Police Station Tizit HQ by the Advisor.
Nagaland House Delhi
The staff and students of Nagaland House Delhi gathered at 29, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road to celebrate the Independence Day. Jyoti Kalash, IAS Additional Chief Secretary and Chief Resident Commissioner, hoisted the National Flag. Kalash read out the Independence Day speech and extended warm Independence Day wishes to the gathering.
Sanis
Independence Day celebration at Sanis ADC Headquarters was graced by Er. Kropol Vitsu, Advisor for Prison, Printing & Stationery. The special guest hoisted the National Flag and received the Rashtriya Salute from the parade contingents. The Independence Day speech was delivered at GHS ground in Sanis town. The event featured participation from five parade contingents during the March past. Lakhuti cultural troupe delighted the audience with a folk song, while Hope Spring School from Sanis town presented a special performance. The special guest also inaugurated stalls arranged by government departments and SHGs, adding to the vibrancy of the occasion.
Seyochung
Independence Day celebration was held at Seyochung HQ Public Ground. Benei M Lamthiu, Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, graced the occasion as the special guest. Amidst the spirit of patriotism, the National Flag was hoisted, accompanied by the resonating National Anthem sung by St. Mary’s High School. Parade Contingents, including V.G Yangzitong Village ‘A’ and ‘B’ and St. Mary’s High School, were proudly led by Nikihe Chishi, Supedar Major of VGA. Special song by Lumliba T Sangtam and captivating cultural dances by Sumi Community Women and Sangtam Community Women added cultural depth to the event. The special guest also inaugurated the CCTV camera at the Police Outpost Station Seyochung HQ. The celebration saw the active participation of Heads of Offices, GBs, VCC members, and the public.
Tening
Tening sub-division joined the district in commemorating the 77th Independence Day at Tening town local ground. The event was graced by Namri Nchang, MLA, who served as the special guest for the occasion.
Upon his arrival, Namri hoisted the National Flag, followed by receiving the Rastriya Salute from the parade contingents. The National Anthem was sung with fervor by students from Government Higher Secondary School. Subsequently, Namri delivered the insightful Independence Day speech, while a special performance was presented by Keringseyile.
Earlier in the day, the National flag was hoisted across various government offices and public establishments, symbolizing unity in the celebration of freedom.
Post the formal programme, the special guest inspected various stalls. An engaging football exhibition match took place involving government employees and public leaders.
Pfutsero
Pfutsero sub-division united with the nation in celebrating the 77th Indian Independence Day at the Pfutsero Town Sports complex. Dr Neisatuo Mero, MLA, Government of Nagaland was the Chief Guest. The MLA hoisted the National Flag and received the Rashtriya Salute from seven parade contingents. The occasion saw the reading of the Independence Day message and a pledge to achieve a drug-free Nagaland. The program featured patriotic displays, musical performances, felicitations, and the inauguration of exhibition stalls. The MLA also inaugurated a CCTV system at the police station and followed by the beating of retreat.
Changtongya
Independence Day was celebrated at the SDO (Civil) Office Complex in Changtongya. C. Wangan, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), hoisted the Indian National Flag. The Independence Day speech concluded with a pledge for a drug-free Nagaland. The ceremony was attended by departmental officers, community leaders, and dignitaries.
