Nagaland: Martyr’s Day commemorated at Raj Bhavan

Commemorating the day on which three young revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement – Bhagat Singh, Shukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru – were hanged by the British, Martyr’s Day was observed at the Raj Bhavan, Kohima on 23 March.

Governor La Ganesan, along with officers and staff of Raj Bhavan paid tribute to the revolutionary heroes. In his short address, the Governor highlighted how Martyr’s Day came to be observed.

He mentioned that the whole country is an observer of the brave heroes who laid down their lives at a very young age for the cause of the nation and therefore become an inspiration for many young men and women to fight for freedom.

Commissioner and secretary to Governor, Wezope Kenye also delivered a short speech on the significance of the celebration saying that it is a day of remembrance and tribute to the brave men who laid down their lives for the freedom of our country.

He said their sacrifice was not in vain as it ignited a spark of revolution and resistance among the people of India. Kenye mentioned that they were willing to sacrifice everything, including their lives, for the country.

The brave men fought against injustice, inequality, and oppression, and in doing so, he said they became the epitome of courage and sacrifice. He added that people should remember and pay homage to all the brave men and women who fought for freedom.

Adding that this Shahee Diwas is not just a day of remembrance, but also of reaffirmation of our commitment to the values and ideals that our freedom fighters stood for, he urged them to take inspiration from their sacrifice and continue towards a better India, where every citizen is treated with dignity and respect, and also where justice and equality prevail.
