The Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) has asked for review and amendment to the Nagaland Municipal Act. 2001 as it breaches Article 371(A) that gives special status to the people of the state.

The Act “infringes on the rights of the Nagas enshrined under Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution which is sacrosanct to the identity and survival of the Nagas as a people,” the apex body of the Chakhesang tribe said in a statement.

“Tax on Land and Building” should be repealed and deleted and the “policy on Women Reservation be reviewed as per local and social practices,” CPO stated.

It demanded the state government to bring out a “workable act” during the first session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, which is to begin on 20 March 2023, adding that the Chakhesang people will not participate in the forthcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) election unless the necessary changes are made.

The elections to the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) in the state are scheduled to be held on 16 May 2023 with 33% reservation for women.
