Nagaland Municipal Bill 2023: NDPP celebrates ‘fulfilment’ of gender equality

Kohima: NDPP says implementation of NMB will pave way for brighter and more equitable future for Nagaland’s urban areas

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) on Friday congratulated the State’s Legislative Assembly for passing the Nagaland Municipal Bill, 2023 with 33 per cent reservation for women in the Urban Local Bodies. “This landmark decision is a significant step towards fulfilling the NDPP’s constitutional guarantee of gender equality and a key commitment made in our manifesto,” the ruling party stated.

The party affirmed its believe in “equal opportunity” for every citizen “to participate in the democratic process and contribute to the betterment of our society” and that with the Nagaland Municipal Bill, 2023 being passed, it is a step closer to its goal.

The reservation for women in municipal bodies will open the door to a whole new world of opportunities, making our urban areas more representative, fair, and responsive to the diverse needs of our people, NDPP stated. It also maintained its believe that “when women are involved in the decision-making process, it leads to better governance and more balanced development.”

Further, the party commended Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and all members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and extended its sincere appreciation and gratitude to all sections of the Naga society for making this historic milestone possible.

This is a collective triumph of all citizens of the State, NDPP stated, while appealing to all Nagas to cast aside any reservations and unite to bring all-round development to all towns in the state for the future generations.

NDPP reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality, diversity, and inclusivity and also maintained that the implementation of the Nagaland Municipal Bill, 2023 will “pave the way for a brighter and more equitable future for Nagaland’s urban areas.”

On 9th November, CM Rio had moved the Nagaland Municipal Bill, 2023 for consideration at the Third Session (Emergent Session) of the 14th Assembly. Later on the same day, the Bill was unanimously passed by the House.
