Addressing a press conference at PHQ today, Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma stated that the Nagaland Police have been making decent progress in fighting against drugs and extortion. “Our own mechanism within the Police department have been strengthened,” said Sharma.
A preliminary list of Nagaland Police personnel under substance abuse has been prepared where notices has been issued to them. “Around 30 police personnel from one unit have come forward and are now availing rehabilitation,” informed the DGP affirming that the Nagaland Police have been keeping a strict vigilant over its personnel who are under substance abuse.
“In the last three months 43 Police personnel have been suspended under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), 23 departmental proceeding have been completed wherein, one was given compulsory retirement and seven dismissed from service. 20 departmental enquiry cases are pending and the personnel are currently under suspension,” revealed Sharma.

While appealing to the police personnel under substance abuse to come forward and report so that the department can assist in their rehabilitation, DGP Sharma also warned that if the Department “finds out on its own, there will be no leniency”.
In the last three months (June- August), drugs worth around Rs 25 crores were seized, 133 FIRs registered and 157 persons were arrested, informed the DGP. Further, around 24 people have been arrested with regard to Extortion cases in the past few months.
