Nagaland SDG Action Awards 2025 held in Kohima; TR Zeliang calls for Accelerated Sustainable Development

The Nagaland SDG Action Awards 2025 and State-Level Consultation on SDG India Index 4.0 and NER District SDG Index 2.0 organized by Sustainable Development Goal Coordination Centre (SDGCC), Planning & Transformation Department was held at the Capital Convention centre Kohima on 13th March 2026.

Speaking during the Award Ceremony for Nagaland SDG Action Awards 2025, Deputy Chief Minister, T. R. Zeliang who was the Guest of Honour for the occasion said organizing such platform successfully brings together all departments to reflect, recognize and set a roadmap for our common development agenda ‘Development for all—Leaving No One Behind’ as  Communities are at the heart of sustainable development and their active participation is key to our state’s success.

Highlighting Nagaland’s journey towards achieving the SDGs, he said that Mokokchung, Kohima and Dimapur districts secured places among the top ten districts in the entire North Eastern Region reflected in the North Eastern Region SDG District Index 2023–24 while nine districts been placed in the ‘Front Runner’ category, marking a significant improvement from the 2021–22 Baseline Index since the first edition released in 2021. He also stated that three districts of Nagaland are among the fastest mover districts, showing maximum improvements in terms of their SDG composite scores in the entire North East Region and Nagaland’s balanced progress across critical areas such as health, education, gender equality and infrastructure positioning Nagaland as a rising leader in the North East’s sustainable development journey.

TR Zeliang also said while taking immense pride in these achievements, we should also recognize the challenging considerable work ahead, particularly in addressing district-level indicators that show weaker performance, and in ensuring timely, high-quality data updation across State and National portals and therefore called for a continued collaboration among departments, strengthened data systems and sustained commitment from all stakeholder so that  our state makes a meaningful progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, thereby laying a strong foundation for our ultimate vision of a Viksit Nagaland 2047.

Congratulating the award recipients, Zeliang remarked that they represented the spirit of innovation and commitment that drives progress, as their work demonstrated that impactful change is possible even with limited resources and encourage them to continue inspiring others and also called upon the officers from the State and Districts not to let this consultation end as a discussion alone but to let it result in actionable district-level strategies, clear timelines and measurable outcomes as the global deadline of 2030 is approaching steadily and the responsibility is to accelerate implementation with urgency and coordination.

The Deputy Chief Minister also presented the Nagaland SDG Action Awards 2025 mementoes, certificates and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- each to the following Awardees, Pinnacle Skill in the category of Economic Sustainability, Good Samaritan Women Society in the category of Social Development and MOBUST Team Nagaland (Youth Net) in the category of Environment Sustainability.

Development Commissioner, Temsunaro Aier, in her welcome address Development Commissioner Temsunaro Aier highlighted that the government is actively aligning Global Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with Nagaland’s development priorities. She noted that State-Level consultations on the SDG India Index 4.0 and NER District SDG Index 2.0 provided valuable insights into the state’s performance, identified areas for improvement, and marked a key milestone in the roadmap toward 2030, contributing to the vision of a Viksit Nagaland by 2047.

Temsunaro Aier also highlighted that Nagaland SDG Action Awards were instituted to recognize and felicitate communities, organizations, and individuals whose initiatives addressed development challenges at the grassroots level and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the category of Economic Sustainability, Social Development and Environmental Sustainability.

She urged all departments and districts to improve data quality, keep portals updated, and use SDG tools for planning and course correction, as the SDG India Index and NER District SDG Index help track progress and identify areas needing further effort.

Regional Head, NER, UNDP, John Borgoyary in his address said that UNDP and the Government of Nagaland were partnered since early 2019 and highlighted the journey and achievements of the state in terms of SDG since 2021. He noted that while celebrating the state’s SDG achievements, attention must be given to districts that are lagging and require additional efforts and innovative solutions to contribute effectively to national goals. He also stressed the importance of implementing SDGs at the district, block, and local levels, and emphasized that reliable data acts like a GPS, providing an accurate picture of progress.

The day-long consultation was attended by administrative and departmental heads, SDG nodal officers, deputy commissioners and representatives from all 17 districts, along with Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change & Village Guards, C.L John, and MLA, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso.
