Nagaland set to become 1st State to introduce Virtual Labs in colleges

Kohima: Virtual Labs a big step towards SDG goals laid out in NEP 2020 towards focusing on more practical and pure science-based education

In a unique and innovative approach to education the Government of Nagaland is all set to introduce Virtual Laboratories in Government colleges across the State by October this year. This move makes Nagaland the first in the Country to introduce Virtual Labs in Government colleges.

The Virtual Labs aims to revolutionize science education by providing students with access to more than 500 experiments in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

This innovative approach will make science more accessible and engaging encouraging students to develop a scientific mindset

A significant step forward was taken on 30th August 2024 by Higher Education Department, GoN under the leadership of its Minister Temjen Imna Along, in advancing science education within the state of Nagaland as demonstration of the Virtual Labs project was successfully conducted. This event marks a critical milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the learning experience for students across the state’s educational institutions.

“One important point about Virtual labs is that it is ‘Science in your pocket’, for students which will inculcate a scientific bent of mind in students which is sorely lacking today,” the officials of Beyond Labz stated.

It may be motioned, that the introduction of Virtual Labs is a big step towards the Centre’s SDG goals laid out in NEP 2020, towards focusing on more practical and pure science-based education using Virtual Labs.

Minister for Higher Education Temjen Imna Along, asserted that the department is evolving to become institutions of excellence for the citizens of the state.

Attributing the positive changes in the Higher Education sector under the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the Minister said, there has been dynamic and positive changes in the quality of Education imparted in the higher education sector.

“This Virtual Labs which is called Beyond Labz is going to be implemented in the higher education institutions- the government sectors in Nagaland. We know very well the deprivation of Laboratories in our education institutions. Virtual Labs, the collaboration which the Higher Education Department is going to do will bring about more than 600 world class laboratories virtually and before going into the main practical by the students, professors, associate professors, HoDs of biology, chemistry, physics, all of them will be able to go through this virtual labs in a very advanced manner and without wasting or putting oneself to the hazards of a physical Laboratory and get the right knowledge before finally getting into the practicals,” said the Minister.

He also pointed out that, Virtual Labs will save a lot of economics at the same time increase the learning base for the students and the teachers and they can envision more laboratories and exercises beyond those 500 virtual labs which is inside the software, adding that, they can also curate their own lab programs through this system.

The Minister underscored that this will be a world class virtual laboratory set and many of the institutions in the world are using this technology to enhance empowerment of the students and teachers in the sector of science and research.
