In view of the repeal of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 in toto through the Nagaland Municipal Act (Repeal Act 2023), the State Election Commission has cancelled the election to the Urban Local Body (ULB).
It may be mentioned that the much-anticipated election to the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) comprising of three municipal councils and 36 town councils in Nagaland was scheduled to be conducted on 16 May with 33% women reservation for the first time.

But soon after the election notification was released, tribal hohos, civil society organisations and others strongly opposed it on the grounds that it infringed Article 371-A.
Subsequently, the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) during its first Assembly session on 28 March, resolved and adopted a resolution to unanimously repeal the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 in toto with immediate effect, taking serious note of the stiff voices of opposition to the ULB election.
