Nagaland University commemorates 79th Independence Day

Nagaland University, Lumami joined the rest of the country in celebrating India’s 79th Independence Day with a flag hoisting ceremony and a formal programme graced by Prof. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, Vice Chancellor as the Chief Guest on August 15.

In his speech, Prof Patnaik reflected on the sacrifices made by leaders during India’s freedom struggle and recalled the traumatic experiences of the partition, emphasizing the importance of remembering these historical events as they signify the richness of India’s civilization.

Prof Patnaik also spoke about the importance of democracy, noting that Indian democracy is distinct from Western democracy and encouraged all citizens to take pride in their identity as Indians and a Bharatiya.

He highlighted Nagaland’s progress, including the establishment of the state’s first medical college, while acknowledging the absence of institutions like IITs and IIMs. He said the event was also about the celebration of the development of Nagaland University, specifically the inauguration of three new buildings. He expressed optimism for the future of Nagaland University, predicting it would emerge as one of the top institutions in time to come.

Welcome address was given by N Albert Khizho, Finance Officer.  Cultural performances were presented by students from Kendriya Vidyalaya Lumami, NURSF(L), and NUSU(L). Angunuo Khieya, Deputy Registrar, Finance proposed a vote of thanks, extending gratitude to all the participants and organizers for their contributions to the success of the event. Independence Day was also celebrated at Kohima and Medziphema campuses.
