Nagaland University conducts workshop on substance free healthy life

Nagaland University organized a workshop on “Substance Free Healthy Life” on November 25 at Lumami under the aegis of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 3.0 of the Government of India.

In opening remarks, Dr. Lobeno Mozhui the Chairperson of the Inaugural Ceremony shared about the alarming rise of drugs and use of tobacco in the state of Nagaland. Quoting the data shared by Director General of Police Rupin Sharma, she mentioned that Nagaland is estimated to have around 1.2 lakh drug users, with heroin, sunflower drugs, and tobacco being the most common substances. Using data from a survey, she stated that 43.3% of adults in Nagaland use tobacco which is higher than the national average of 28.6 percent.

Welcoming the participants, Peter Ki, PRO of Nagaland University, expressed appreciation to the ViceChancellor incharge Prof. M.K. Sinha, Prof. Wangshimenla Dean of Student welfare, and Nodal Officer of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan campaign at headquarters Lumami, and the invited resource persons for their dedication to addressing one of the most pressing social issues which is affecting the youth and families of Nagaland.

Addressing the audience, Prof. M.K. Sinha mentioned that “wisdom lies in a healthy body and mind.” Prof. Sinha warned that alcohol and tobacco consumption weakens health and negatively affects families and society. He also emphasized the need for harmony between policy and practice, saying that despite Nagaland being a dry state, the use of substance continues. He also encouraged the government to strictly regulate the supply and production of tobacco.

The technical session was conducted by the resource person S. Limawapang, Program Manager, Care & Counselling, Mokokchung. Limawapang shared an in-depth understanding of the local context of tobacco use among the youth, explaining that cultural norms, social acceptance and peer influence continue to drive the use of smokeless tobacco products such as tamul, khaini, gutka, zarda, etc.

He highlighted the severe health hazards of smokeless tobacco, including gum disease, tooth decay, leukoplakia, cardiovascular problems, etc. He stressed the importance of education and awareness in preventing substance abuse and also to overcome abuse by stressing key approaches including stress management, physical activity, healthy alternatives, peer support, goal setting, avoiding triggers, and building new routines. Mr. Rongsen also complemented the resource person’s in-depth discussion of the theme, by sharing personal experiences, including the need to remain vigilant against the dangers of substance abuse.

Earlier, the inaugural ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Rumi Thar, who expressed gratitude to all participants, and organizers for their efforts in promoting a workshop related to health and wellness.
