Nagaland University marked a major milestone with the inauguration of a new academic building for the Department of Education and Department of Teacher Education at its Kohima Campus, Meriema on July 14.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, Pro. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik formally inaugurated the building with unveiling of a monolith and ribbon cutting ceremony, in the presence of Pro Vice-Chancellor of Kohima Campus, Prof N Venuh and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Medziphema Campus, Prof Dipak Sinha, the Registrar Dr Abemo, Deans of Schools, Finance Officer, Engineers of the University, Heads of Departments, faculty members, Officers, administrative staff, students and scholars.
The program was chaired by Prof Lungsang Zeliang, Head of the Department of Education, who welcomed the gathering and expressed gratitude to the University authorities and different sections of the University which had contributed to the successful completion of the project. She stated that the building was a result of dreams, passion and hard work of the stakeholders.
An invocation was led by Prof. Buno Zetsuvi, Chairperson, Construction Monitoring Committee of Kohima Campus, setting a reflective tone for the program. Er. Rukusayi Rhakho, Executive Engineer of the University presented a detailed report of the new building and shared the history behind the construction and also highlighted the cost and other details of the building.

Dr. Abemo, Registrar, in his address, commended the collaborative efforts behind the construction. He emphasized on positive growth to build the University and urged all stakeholders to be productive.
In his speech, Prof N Venuh, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Kohima Campus, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for his continued support. He provided a brief history of the project, mentioning that the building had been under construction for eight years and faced several challenges. He shared about further development underway; including the approval of a conference hall and a long-felt need of an auditorium for the Kohima Campus which is likely to come to fruition soon. He also urged the students and faculty to take care of the facilities and promote positivity, highlighting that negativity has hindered the university’s growth.
Vice Chancellor, Prof Patnaik, in his address, reflected on the 30-year journey of Nagaland University, acknowledging that while new departments were created over the years, infrastructural growth had lagged behind. He praised Prof. Buno Zetsuvi for her persistence in pushing for the infrastructural developments in the Campus. Prof. Patnaik candidly spoke about some of the issues that existed before his tenure and affirmed that development funds are now being effectively utilized.
He congratulated all the officials involved for their commitment, mentioning in particular Prof GT Thong, who recently retired as Pro Vice-Chancellor. Addressing the students, he emphasized the importance of excellence and responsibility, stating firmly that “money is not a problem when it comes to enhancing education.”
He insisted that only top-quality infrastructure is acceptable for the institution and stressed the need for a strong sense of belonging among students and faculty members. He further encouraged the students and scholars to work hard, be sincere and come out with flying colours.
