The Department of Education, Nagaland University organized a one day Seminar for Research Scholars and Educationists on the theme “Education and Social Responsibilities” at its premises on November 6.
Altogether 95 participants from all over Nagaland and from outside the state attended the seminar. In her opening remarks, the Head of the Department Prof. Lungsang Zeliang dwelt on the conceptualization of the seminar as a reminder of the importance of education being closely linked to society and to help understand the changes in higher education with the NEP 2020. She also expressed pride in the achievements of the products of the Department and emphasized on the role of teachers in preparing students to be good citizens, contributing and giving back to the society.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr. Zavise Rume, Director of International University, Nagaland stressed on the need of creating a knowledge society through academic programmes. Further sharing that the ethos of Naga practices can be utilized, Dr. Rume commended the involvement of local community leaders, artisans and experts in the educational field and integrating indigenous knowledge with modern technologies. He asserted that both can co-exist and strengthen one another.
The inauguralprogramme, chaired by Dr. B. Venkata Rao, Associate Professor, Department of Education, Nagaland University included invocation by Dr. Anu GS, Associate Professor of Department of Education and a special number by the Ph.D scholars of the Department and vote of thanks by Dr. M.R.N Babu, Associate Professor, Department of Education, Nagaland University.

The resource person of the first session Prof. Buno Liegise, speaking on the theme “Education and Social Responsibilities” emphasized on the root meaning of education and the gestalt view of education policies from a bird’s eye view. Dwelling on the features of NEP 2020 which seeks to make higher education multidisciplinary, holistic, transformative and futuristic, she stated that Nagaland University has taken early initiatives for the implementation of NEP 2020 by the introduction of multidisciplinary higher education, introduction of FYUGP, Vocational based courses, etc.
The speaker also highlighted the meaning of social responsibilities stating that it is the responsibility of individuals and social entities to act in a way to benefit their environment and society. She called upon all present to be brand ambassadors of their education, by giving back to society, by sharing their knowledge and skills and by developing 21st century skills.
The second session was chaired and moderated by Dr. Neizo-ü Mero, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, Nagaland University. The resource person, Ms. Narola Chuba, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, Nagaland University, focused mainly on the issues and challenges of FYUGP, including its advantages. Challenges pertaining to implementation of the Multidisciplinary aspect, The Multiple Entry and Exit System (MEES), Internship, Increase in teachers workload, to name a few, were deliberated upon by the house. Despite its challenges, the resource person also highlighted some of the positive aspects of FYUGP. She spoke on some of its key features like – enhancing student choice and autonomy through flexible course structures, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, improving career readiness, and fostering deeper learning and skill development over a four-year period. The session concluded on a positive and constructive note, giving participants a clearer understanding of the objectives and opportunities offered by the FYUGP.
