Nagaland University organizes conference on ‘Bharatiya Bhasha Parivar’

One Day National Conference on “Bharatiya Bhasha Parivar” sponsored by Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, Ministry of Education, Government of India, was successfully organised at Nagaland University, Kohima Campus on December 10.

Apart from keynote address by Prof Ramesh Chand Sharma, Retired Professor of Linguistics, University of Delhi and deliberations of six resource persons, thirty papers were presented in two parallel sessions. Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University Prof Jagadish K Patnaik was the Chief Guest at the inaugural session and Prof N Venuh, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Kohima Campus was Guest of Honour who highlighted the multilingual scenario and cultural diversity of India.

Two volumes of books on Bharatiya Bhasha Parivar published by National Book Trust of India were released at the Inaugural Session by Prof N Venuh and Prof Ramesh Chand Sharma.

About 104 participants registered and participated in the conference. Prof Ajit Kumar Baishya, Dean, Rabindranath Tagore School of Indian Languages and Cultural Studies, Assam University, Silchar, Prof Pangersenla Walling, HoD, Department of Linguistics, Dr Mimi K Ezung, HoD, Department of Tenyidie, Prof Rabi Ranjan Kumar, Department of Hindi, Dr Imlienla Imsong and Dr Bijen Kumar Singh, Centre for Naga Tribal Languages, Nagaland University were the resource persons.

Scholars and teachers from the departments of English, Hindi, Linguistics, Tenyidie and Centre for Naga Tribal Language Studies and affiliated colleges of Nagaland University participated and presented their papers.

Prof Jano S Liegise, Dean, School of Humanities and Education, Nagaland University delivered the valedictory speech. In the inaugural session, Prof MAJ Khan, HoD, English delivered the welcome address and Prof Nigamananda Das, Local Coordinator, delivered the concept note and explained the objective of the conference. Dr Subhashis Banerjee, also Local Coordinator gave the vote of thanks in the valedictory session. The resource persons and participants deliberated on the features of different Naga and Northeast Indian languages, language policy of India, future of language, role of mother tongue in NEP 2020, necessity of multilingualism and issues of the endangered languages. The conference continued till late evening with fruitful deliberations.
