Nagaland’s doctor-to-population ratio currently stands at a staggering 1:4056 against WHO’s recommended 1:1000, highlighted Dr. Bernard Amer, President of Nagaland In-Service Doctors Association (NIDA) during the annual conference and general body meeting of the Nagaland In-Service Doctors Association (NIDA) on November 30 at Hotel Japfü, Kohima.

In this regard, the urgent need for an increase in medical seats per year has been communicated to the government as a long-term measure. As a short-term solution, NIDA has also been advocating for an extension of the superannuation age of doctors to retain more manpower within the department. “This ongoing issue is a focal point of our effort. We remain optimistic that a resolution will be reached in the near future,” said Dr. Amer.

Highlighting the inception of Nagaland In-Service Doctors’ Association which officially came into existence on August 3, 2006, Dr. Amer said, “The founding members, recognizing the imperative for a robust and unified body of doctors in the government sector, sought to foster unity among themselves. Their vision was to collectively work towards the development of each individual doctor, the department, and the healthcare system in our State.” Presently the association comprises of 436 member encompassing all allopathic doctors, including dentists, employed by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, irrespective of their employment status -whether regular or contractual. “The association mirrors the magnitude of our department, which has witnessed substantial increase in size over the years. Unfortunately, this growth has not kept pace with the burgeoning population, resulting in a significant shortage of trained doctors in the state,” stressed Dr. Amer.

The Association has also been collaborating with the college authority to ensure fair and inclusive employment opportunities for their doctors. Planting hundreds of trees in the college campus to enhance its appearance and environmental impact has also been initiated by NIDA. “Currently, some of the trees have grown as tall as some of us here,” humored Dr Amer.

The President also noted that one of the primary objectives of NIDA is to advance medical sciences and medical education in the state.

In an inspiring tone, he emphasized the paramount importance of unity within their association. “The adage ‘united we stand, divided we fall’ encapsulates the power that comes with unity,” remarked Dr. Amer.

During the event, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA, graced the occasion as the Special Guest and emphasized the importance of unity over tribalism in his address. He highlighted the need to strive for the improvement of society while championing the cause of humanity, and prioritizing local residents for employment opportunities in the medical college. The MLA recommended comprehensive training for junior doctors and underscored the significance of fair and flexible transfers. While acknowledging the prevalence of private practice, he encouraged medical professionals to prioritize public service during duty hours.

Recognizing the unwavering commitment of doctors to their responsibilities, even on non-working days, Dr. Rhutso encouraged their readiness to accept transfers for the betterment of serving the people. Dr. Rhutso concluded by recommending the rationalization of positions and titles within the medical college, and advised the doctors to regain public support through exemplary service.

Special invitee V. Kezo, Commissioner and Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, emphasized the necessity of tackling pressing issues without avoiding challenging tasks. He also highlighted the department’s need for more structured operations and the incorporation of super specialty services to address challenges such as shortages in critical infrastructure.

The program was blessed with invocation by Arep Tzudir, KABA Pastor, and the vote of thanks was pronounced by Dr.M Nukshisangla Jamir. Dr.Ritu Thur, Principal Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare gave the keynote address.
