Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan awareness held at Yachem

Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Awareness programme was held at Government High School, Yachem, Longleng on August 22. The programme was jointly organised by the District Administration Longleng in collaboration with Longleng District Legal Service Authority and Medical Department. The program commence with an invocation pronounced by Pastor Yachem Baptist Church, Rev. Adao Phom.

Medical Officer, Yachem, Dr Visino Nakhro and Deputy Legal Aid Defence Council Longleng, P Monyei Phom were the resource persons of the day.

Dr. Visino Nakhro, said the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan also called as Drugs Free India campaign, is a flagship initiative launched by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India in August 2020. It is a national movement against drugs abuse and substance addiction, focusing on awareness, prevention, counselling, treatment, de-addiction to reduce the demand for drugs and substance abuse and to build a healthy and addiction free India, where substance abuse and addiction has become a growing challenge in our society. In India, the rising trend of substance abuse especially among youth is alarming and substance abuse has dangerous consequences for the person abusing drugs, family and society at large, she added.

She spoke on the Topics:- Cycle of Addiction, Categories of Psychotic Substances Used, Signs and Symptoms of Substance abuse, Impact of drug Abuse and Addiction, Mental Health, Family Impact, Social and Behavioral Impact, Support and Treatment Services, Prevention Awareness, Counselling and Psychological Support, Medical Treatment and Rehabilitation, Community and Family Involvement and Policy and Governance.

She said that youth must abstain from bad company and communities should protect the youth and support those who are struggling with addiction rather than isolating them because addiction is not just a crime but it is also a disease that needs compassion and treatment. Law and government efforts alone are not enough but it is through collective responsibility we can solve the challenge of drug abuse and addiction.

She said the real change must begin from within ourselves by spreading awareness, support prevention and help to build a society where no youth falls into the trap of addiction.  She also urged to pledge together to build a healthy, safer and drug free India, where every individual, especially our youth can fulfill their true potential.

P Monyei Phom, highlighted the gathering on service provided by the District Legal Service Authority, and shared on the topics: Legal Drugs, Illegal Drugs, What is drugs abuse, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic substances Act 1985. Notification specifying small quantity and commercial quantity as per the NDPS Act, Punishments, Types of Drugs Abuse in Longleng, Negative effects of Sending Drugs Abusers to Jail, Effective Alternatives for drugs addicts, Discrimination on drugs addicts, Statistics of cases registered in Longleng district, Comparison of NDPS + Theft cases with other cases and how much money is spent on consuming Drugs in the district.

She also said the responsibility of curbing drug abuse can depend a lot on the society that we are living in, the police and the courts are just to give punitive punishment to the abusers. She asserted that researchers have shown that punitive punishment is not the solution to curb drug abuse in a society and urged everyone to make Longleng a drug free district.

Concluding remarks was said by AHM, GHS Yachem, Ashutosh Samal. The programme was chaired by EAC Yachem, C Tsalimse Sangtam and concluded with a benediction by Pastor Noksosang, T.I. Lakpa.
