The Northern Angami Students Union(NASU) has served an ultimatum to the Secretary, Nagaland State Social Welfare Board today for failing to recruit indigenous inhabitants for a few posts in Kohima district. As per the terms and conditions, in its recruitment advertisement, the Board had mentioned that candidates should be indigenous inhabitants of the respective districts. In its letter, the NASU has given the Board a period of 13 days to take action immediately.

The NASU issued the ultimatum in continuation to the letters submitted by the Angami Students’ Union, in the year 2019, 2020 and 2022

In its previous representations, the ASU highlighted the position of the Centre Administrator, Case worker and a Driver at the Kohima Sakhi-One Stop Centre which were occupied by the non-indigenous inhabitants of the district. “While we understand the cosmopolitan nature of the State capital, we strongly intend to register that the rights and privileges which the indigenous inhabitants are entitled to, be transparently retained. As such, under no circumstances appointment of any non-indigenous citizen is totally unacceptable,” stated the representation in 2019. The representation had pointed out that the privilege of indigenous tribes of Kohima District should be strictly followed in the grades that are permissible and entitled, as followed in other districts.

Failure of the Board to take action led the ASU to issue other representations in 2020 and 2022.

Mention may be made that the Union had issued the representations with reference to an advertisement in 2016. Documents of earlier representations were also attached to the NASU ultimatum for reference.

“It is still learnt that the privileges of Kohima indigenous inhabitants (i.e.Angami) are being denied in grades that are permissible and entitled. Having mentioned about the intentional deprivation of our rights under your mission, the Angami Students’ Union questions your authority whether the SRCW would be able to compensate the rights and privileges of the indigenous inhabitants which has been denied thus far?”  highlighted the representation in 2022.

“It is with infuriation that the undersigned demand the concern department to seriously look upon the cited references putforth on several occasion and that necessary measure be taken immediately and implement it within a period of 13 days, failing to which the union should not held responsible for any untoward action against the said department after the expiry of the stipulated duration,” asserted the letter issued by Meteitoulie Talie, Vice President (NASU) and Keneitsituo Kense Education/Secretary (NASU).
