National Seminar explores tribal culture and identity at Yingli College

A one-day National Seminar on ‘Tribal Culture and Identity in India’, was held at Borgohain Hall Yingli College, Longleng on October 16, sponsored by the Directorate of Higher Education, State Level Quality Assurance Cell (SLQAC), Nagaland with Dr Parag D Parobo, Associate Professor, Department of History, Goa University as the main speaker.

In his welcome address, the Principal, Yingli College, Dr T Temsu Imti, underscored the importance of cultural preservation. He encouraged the students to fully utilize such opportunities, stressing that it is very important for students of today to learn and preserve their tribal culture and identity in this rapidly changing world. Dr Imti also thanked the Department of Higher Education for their crucial sponsorship.

The inaugural session was chaired by Dr Kekhriengulieu Tachu, Assistant Professor, Department of English. The program began with the College Anthem and Invocation by Phenmei B Phom, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, followed by a cultural performance – a folk song by the BA 1st Semester students.

Dr A Rahman, Associate Professor, Department of History delivered the keynote address. The main Inaugural Lecture was given through an online platform by Dr Parag D. Parobo, Associate Professor, Department of History at Goa University.

Dr Parobo delivered a comprehensive lecture focusing on tribal culture and identity in both the pre- and post-colonial periods. The inaugural proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks by Vice Principal, Dr. B Henshet Phom.

The academic sessions continued with two focused Technical Sessions. Session-1 delved into “The Phom Nagas’ Culture, Oral Narratives, and Identity,” and the Session-2 discussed the “Transition from Tradition to Modernity and Cultural Continuities”. The enriching day-long seminar concluded with a Valedictory Session.
