Hundreds of people, mostly women, under the aegis of the Northern Angami Women Organization (NAWO) on Saturday carried out a peaceful rally in the state capital Kohima protesting against an alleged attempted rape, murder and assault of a woman at Botsa village by one Khrietuolie Kense of Tsiemekhu Basa on July 16. The rallyists demanded justice for the victim and stringent punishment for the accused.

NAWO president Kedisenuo Keditsu stated that the organisation expects the government to deliver justice at the earliest.

NAWO submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima where it stated that the accused person should not be granted bail, and the police force should use all powers available in law to detain him. The organisation also appealed the authority for the safety and protection for the victim and her family.

Stating that such menace is not fit to exist in a civilized society, NAWO demanded that the accused should be convicted and punished as per the relevant section of law.

Keditsu mentioned that if their demands are not accepted, the NAWO’s next course of action will include the youth and children and it will be difficult to stop them. She also asserted that the organisation will leave no stone unturned.

“The culprit deserves capital punishment and does not fit to exist in a civilized society,” she added. She underscored that a son of the soil has committed a heinous crime and the crime is not forgivable.

The accused allegedly made a deliberate attempt to sexually assault the victim and also attempted to take the life of the victim.

“The victim was subjected to brutal physical violence, causing severe physical and mental harm” NAWO highlighted. As per the organisation, the conduct of the accused is a reprehensible insult to the dignity of women and strikes at the core of decency and respect.

It was learnt that the culprit is a repeated offender.

“This cowardly and brutal act is not only a direct violation of human dignity and safety but also a shameful attack on the fundamental rights and freedom of women in our society. Such crimes cannot, and must not be tolerated under any circumstances. Delay or negligence dealing with such incidents only emboldens perpetrators and weakens public faith in the justice system” stated NAWO.
