NDPP secures win in 152 seats in ULB election; 91 women make history

Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) made a massive win in the Urban Local Bodies election by securing 152 seats followed by Independent candidates claiming 56 seats and BJP securing 25 seats.

The counting of votes to the ULB polls began today at 8:00 am in sixteen counting centres spreading across ten districts.

The other parties, NPF claimed 13 seats, NCP 12, INC 7, NPP and JDU 5 each and LJP 2.

The final poll percentage was recorded at 81.98 percent with over 2 lakh voters exercising their franchise on 26 June.

This ULB is seen as historic for Nagaland, as it was held after a gap of twenty years with 33 percent women reservation for the first time. The last ULB election was held in 2004.

While a total of 198 women candidates were in the fray, 83 women won the seats under 33 percent women reservation and eight women candidates were elected from the unreserved seats.

Nzanrhoni I Mozhui aged 22 from BJP became the youngest female candidate to win the ULB poll under Ward 1 Bhandari Town Council and Nathan Kent aged 25 from JDU was the youngest male candidate from Ward-5 under Tseminyu Town Council. While, Sibeule aged 71 from NDPP was the oldest female candidate to win from Ward 6 under Peren Town Council.

Mention may be made that a total of 64 candidates were declared uncontested, the NDPP had the highest at 45, while its alliance partner BJP had 7. The NCP followed next with 5, while the Indian National Congress was at 3. There were 2 candidates each from NPF and Independent candidates respectively.

The State Election Commissioner T. John Longkumer said by and large the ULB election concluded peacefully except for some minor incidents.

Terming the polls as historic congratulated Naga women and said, “Naga women, this was your election. Reservation has been done and implemented for the first time in history.”

A total of 523 candidates from 11 political parties were in the fray with 325 males and 198 females. The ULB elections were held in 214 wards in three Municipalities and 21 Town Councils.
