The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) held its 5th general convention at the Capital Cultural Hall in Kohima on February 27. The event saw Chief Minister of Nagaland, Dr. Neiphiu Rio, addressing the gathering, reflecting on the party’s journey, challenges, and achievements over the past eight years.
Dr. Rio expressed gratitude for the party’s success, attributing it to divine grace, the dedication of grassroots workers, and the collective efforts of party members. He acknowledged the strengthening of the party’s position through its alliance with the BJP. However, he noted that the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha election was unexpected, describing the formation of an opposition-less government as a rare occurrence. Despite this, the loss in the Lok Sabha election was a significant setback, which he termed not as a political defeat but an ideological one. He emphasized the need for regional parties to remain vigilant and committed to their responsibilities as guardians of the people’s interests.
Dr. Rio highlighted the party’s achievements, particularly the successful implementation of women’s reservation in the 2024 Urban Local Body (ULB) elections after 21 years of struggle. Out of 278 candidates, 153 emerged victorious, with women securing not only the 33% reserved seats but also 37% of the general category seats. He praised the support of Tribal Hohos and the public, calling it a historic milestone for the party.
The Chief Minister underscored the importance of regional parties in protecting Nagaland’s identity, history, and traditions. He urged party leaders to promote forest conservation, responsible power usage, and the implementation of government schemes at the grassroots level. He also highlighted initiatives like the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme (CMHIS) and the Chief Minister’s Micro Finance Initiative, which aim to empower the public and promote self-employment.
Dr. Rio warned that regional parties risk fading into obscurity if they fail to work diligently for their people. He reiterated their role in safeguarding Naga culture, traditions, and customary laws, calling for unity and high sacrifices to ensure long-term success. He also mentioned the honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree conferred upon him by the North East Christian University (NECU), dedicating the honor to the people of Nagaland and party workers.
Addressing the Naga political issue, Dr. Rio emphasized the need for unity among all factions, both underground and overground, to achieve a lasting resolution. He praised the constitutional protections provided by Article 371(A) and stressed the importance of strengthening customary courts to uphold indigenous laws and ensure timely justice.
Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang spoke on the economy, government flagship programs, and welfare schemes. He highlighted Nagaland’s potential in organic farming, horticulture, and tourism, emphasizing the need to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on central funds. He also discussed ongoing infrastructure projects, including the construction of national highways, and urged ministers to ensure the effective implementation of flagship programs.
Minister G. Kaito Aye addressed the Naga political issue, calling for unity and a collective approach to achieve a permanent solution. He reaffirmed the NDPP’s commitment to facilitating an early resolution and urged all stakeholders to work together in the spirit of reconciliation.
Meanwhile, Minister Metsubo Jamir focused on the agriculture and allied sectors, stressing the need to retain farmers in villages and introduce cultivation practices to the younger generation.

Power Minister K.G. Kenye highlighted the challenges in the energy sector, noting the state’s reliance on power purchases and the potential for hydroelectric power generation. He called for public support to harness this potential and reduce revenue losses.
The event featured musical performances by Sentiein Kichu, Metisanen Lemtur, Seyievinuo Chuzho, Azi Rudy, and Kedo, who captivated the audience with their renditions.
