Newly appointed United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, formally assumed charge in New Delhi on January 12, underlining a renewed commitment to elevate the strategic partnership between the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy.

Addressing the people of India after taking charge, Ambassador Gor said he arrived in the country with “profound respect” and a clear mission to deepen and expand ties between India and the United States across diplomacy, trade, security, and technology. Calling India an “incredible nation,” he described his posting as a privilege and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to redefine diplomacy.

Recalling his first visit to India in 2013, Gor said the country left a lasting impression on him through its people, rich history, cultural vibrancy, innovation, and spiritual depth. He said returning to India as the US Ambassador was an honour he had long hoped for.

Ambassador Gor conveyed warm greetings from US President Donald Trump, stating that the President holds deep regard for India and shares a genuine personal friendship with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. He noted that President Trump often speaks fondly of his India visit and expressed hope that the President would visit India again in the near future.

Highlighting the strength of leadership-level ties, Gor said the relationship between the two countries is anchored at the highest levels and built on trust, mutual respect, and the ability to resolve differences as true partners. He described the Indo-US relationship as one of the most consequential global partnerships of the 21st century.

On trade, the Ambassador said negotiations between India and the US are progressing actively, with another round of discussions scheduled shortly. While acknowledging the complexity of negotiations with the world’s most populous nation, he expressed confidence that both sides are determined to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. He emphasized that trade, while important, is only one pillar of the relationship, alongside cooperation in security, counterterrorism, energy, technology, education, and health.

In a significant announcement, Ambassador Gor revealed that India will be invited to join “Pax Silica,” a US-led strategic initiative aimed at building a secure and innovation-driven global silicon supply chain. The initiative covers critical minerals, energy inputs, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and logistics. He said India’s participation as a full member would be crucial as global technology ecosystems take shape.

Praising India’s resilience and innovative spirit, Gor said he looks forward to traveling across the country and engaging with people from all walks of life. He also expressed enthusiasm about working closely with the US Embassy staff in India, stating that the coming years offer an unprecedented opportunity to shape global diplomacy.

Concluding his address, Ambassador Gor reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing an ambitious agenda with India as a true strategic partner, asserting that no partner is more essential to the United States than India. He expressed confidence that the enduring friendship between the two nations would continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.
