The Deputy Commissioner of Chumoukedima on Monday directed to partially open the stretch of NH-29 from Patkai Bridge to Jharnapani from 18 July 2023. The road will be open for light passenger vehicles at the commuters’ own risk, it had said.
The notification also mentioned that the exercise of locating and dislodging of the loose rocks and other safety measures are being undertaken by the authorities on the stretch.
“It is strongly advised to avoid the stretch of NH-29 from Patkai Bridge to Jharnapani and to take the alternate route, Shokhuvi- Pimla- Mhainamtsi -Punglwa- Jharnapani stretch, instead” the notification warned, stating that heavy rainfall is forecasted in coming days.
The following conditions mentioned for usage of the stretch of the road are:
- The road shall be opened for light passenger vehicles between 5 am and 6 pm, only.
- Those willing to travel by the said stretch have to sign an undertaking with the Traffic Police Personnel declaring that the commuter is aware of the risk involved and is undertaking the travel at one’s own risk.
- The cases of medical emergencies, those undertaking travel through air or railways, and officials’ vehicles, may be allowed on case-to-case basis.
- The road shall be closed during the time of dislodging of the rocks or during the exercise, or execution of any other safety measure by authorities.
- For regulation of the volume of the traffic on the stretch, passenger vehicles shall be released in smaller batches from Patkai Bridge and Jharnapani.
- The road on the NH-29 stretch shall be closed completely during heavy downpour of rainfall and will be opened once the rain stops. The commuters are advised to keep abreast with weather forecast issued by NSDMA.
