The 26 Aonglenden Assembly Constituency (AC) office witnessed a sense of purpose and vision as the installation of its new office bearers for the 2024–2027 term turned into a platform for developmental discourse. Addressing the gathering at Arok Sapang, Ungma, Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA)

Speaker, Sharingain Longkumer unveiled several ongoing and upcoming initiatives aimed at transforming 26 Aonglenden AC and Mokokchung as a whole into a model constituency aligned with India’s ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’ vision.

Among the updates, the Speaker announced that the second phase of the FIFA-grade Astroturf project at Rempukong, Ungma, will begin shortly. The project, which has already completed its first phase, is planned for completion in about ten months.

“Once completed, this turf will serve Mokokchung as a sporting destination,” Longkumer said, adding that the second phase would begin shortly and be completed in about ten months.

The Speaker also provided an update on air connectivity for the district, revealing that the Civil Aviation

Department has already conducted a site survey for the proposed heliport in Mokokchung. “A road leading to the site has been identified and earmarked,” he said, signalling steady progress in turning the plan into reality.

Adding to the list of developmental updates, Longkumer informed that a 5-metric ton cold storage unit located at the MMC Shopping Complex has been setup and is now awaiting formal inauguration. The project, he said, was made possible through a joint contribution by all ten MLAs of Mokokchung district.

He further mentioned that the initiative took shape during his tenure as the Chairman of the District

Planning and Development Board (DPDB) and opportunity he got.

As part of major initiatives toward environmental sustainability, Speaker Sharingain Longkumer acknowledged Minister Salhoutuonuo Kruse for designating Ungma Village as a Banana Model Village.

He announced that preparations are underway to train local communities in producing biodegradable

fibre from banana stems—a step aimed at reducing plastic use, which the government discourages.

“We are working towards training and setting up units under 26 Aonglenden AC to create alternatives to plastic using banana stems,” Longkumer said, highlighting both the environmental benefits and livelihood. Training programme on banana fibre product development is in the pipeline, he added.

The Speaker also hinted at upcoming initiatives related to youth employability, assuring that while details are yet to be disclosed, formal announcements will be made soon. Among them is a proposal for sericulture-based weaving of eri silk, which is expected to be launched shortly as part of efforts to promote local skills and sustainable livelihoods.

Centring his speech around the broader national mission of ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’, Longkumer called for transparent, accountable, and coordinated governance, especially in light of the recent shift in developmental funding oversight from the centre. “We have 22 years to plan and implement good policies from the government to village and political levels,” he said, stressing that Nagaland’s development is crucial for a Developed India by 2047.

He emphasized the importance of constituency-specific policy documents, to address both rural and urban needs. “It is my duty to share the plans and vision of the state government for a Developed

Nagaland, but for a Developed Aonglenden, it must be a collective responsibility,” he stated.

Longkumer also called for strong coordination between elected representatives, party office bearers, and the district administration for effective implementation and monitoring. “Let’s think wisely, make good policies, and take up responsibilities with accountability and transparency—starting from me,” he declared.

He further stressed the need for innovation in developmental approaches, particularly in the context of transparency and accountability in public spending. Pointing out the over-reliance on constructing retaining walls and colony steps, he observed that “too many such projects” are often proposed under development schemes. The Speaker encouraged stakeholders to rethink conventional fund usage.

The program marked the formal induction of 370 office bearers under the 26 Aonglenden Assembly

Constituency NDPP unit, comprising members from the parent, youth, and women organisations.

Theconstituency-level structure includes representatives from all seven affiliated units: Ungma Unit with

N Bendang Jamir, in his address, urged the newly inducted members to take their responsibilities seriously. “You have been baptised in NDPP, but only after three years will the public testify about your leadership. Serve with dignity and dedication,” he said. He highlighted that from the central level to the grassroots, the party has been structured, and those who work diligently will be acknowledged and rewarded by the NDPP Parliamentary Board.

He also warned that party indiscipline will not be tolerated, and those going against party directives would face expulsion. He mentioned that inter-constituency competition among all 60 Assembly
