The Thang Students’ Union (TSU) organised a two-day non-biodegradable waste free zone movement under Thang jurisdiction on 3 and 4 January.

On the first day, the drive involved graveyard cleaning work, covering a total of five graveyards located under the said jurisdiction.

The TSU joined hands with the Village Guards, Khiamniungan Meniu Hoikam (Thang Unit), Thang Public Organization, Baptist Church Thang and Village Council Thang to clear the overgrown grasses which overshadow the tombstones. The team also disposed of all kinds of non-biodegradable wastes that lay within the graveyards.

The Union’s ultimate goal is to make the area a complete plastic free zone. In this regard, it aims to disallow the laying of artificial flowers around the tombs. In the following days, the TSU seeks to carry out floral plantations in the spaces surrounding the graveyards which can remain at all times and also add beauty to the place.

Witnessing the negative impact caused by the increasing plastic wastes which is bound to double in the near future, the TSU states it is taking a firm stand by putting the decision into action to save earth through these small steps.

Around 170–180 people took part in the drive.

On the second day, the TSU carried out a signboard campaign in collaboration with the Kusong Thsamve Hoikam (Kusong Students’ Union). The two groups put up signboards displaying environment related quotes at various sites such as medical areas, streams and river sides and places where wastes are dumped.

The Union’s aim, it states, is to educate the community on the importance of saving nature and make them aware about the harms caused to the environment by non-biodegradable pollutants.
