The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has condemned the series of deeply disturbing attacks on the Christian community reported across the country during Christmas season.

The NPCC said these incidents are not isolated acts but a direct consequence of the hate-filled atmosphere nurtured under the BJP-led Modi government.

The party said that minorities, particularly Christians, were allegedly attacked on Christmas Day—a festival symbolising peace, love, and harmony while there were reports of churches being vandalised, Christmas decorations destroyed, and worship disrupted expose the growing intolerance and breakdown of law and order under the present regime.

The NPCC strongly condemned incidents where “extremist elements, masquerading as religious protectors”, reportedly interrupted Christmas fellowship gatherings, hurled abusive and inappropriate language in public, and created fear among worshippers, including women and children. Such acts are a blatant violation of constitutional rights and human dignity, it added.

Highlighting the reported attack on St Mary’s English School in Panigaon village, Nalbari district, Assam, on Christmas Eve, allegedly carried out by activists associated with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, the NPCC said attacking an educational institution during a religious festival reflects the dangerous radicalisation being encouraged by the ruling establishment’s silence and inaction.

The NPCC held the BJP and the Union Government squarely responsible for emboldening fringe elements through their politics of division, selective outrage, and systematic targeting of minorities.

“The continued failure of the government to act decisively against such forces has sent a dangerous message that hate crimes can be committed with impunity,” it said, adding the Congress party will not remain silent while minorities are intimidated and religious freedom is trampled upon.

The NPCC demands immediate and impartial investigations into all incidents of violence and vandalism; strict legal action against the perpetrators and organisations involved; and clear accountability from the Union and State governments concerned.

The NPCC said it stands firmly with the Christian community and all minorities in their struggle for dignity, safety, and justice and reiterated that India belongs to all its people, and any attempt to divide the nation on religious lines will be strongly resisted.
