Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights has appealed to the community leaders and the elected legislators in Manipur to take action to de-escalate the situation prevailing in the neighbouring state since Wednesday. It also implored the leaders to initiate dialogue and negotiation with the stakeholders.

‘… we appeal to the better nature, good sense and enlightened self-interest of the people to bring an immediate end to the acts of killing and vandalism,’ NPMHR said.

‘Manipur is witnessing another iteration of a seemingly endless cycle of violence,’ it stated while expressing sadness over the ‘loss of lives and communal fraternity in a region that has been long vitiated by wanton injustice and use of force.’

NPMHR also condemned Manipur government authorising district heads to order ‘shoot-on-sight’ when and if required and said that the State has the history of being ‘insensitive to the needs and demands of its own citizens’ which has been the cause of the ‘instability and societal fragility that the State is now trying to deal with in ‘fire-fighting’ mode.’
