The National People’s Party (NPP), Nagaland State unit, has voiced serious concern and strong condemnation over a series of Christmas-season incidents reported from different parts of the country, including the Northeast, which have triggered anxiety among minority communities and raised serious questions on public safety, administrative response, and constitutional protections.

In a statement issued through its Media & IPR Cell, the party acknowledged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in a Christmas programme at a church on December 25 was a welcome symbolic affirmation of India’s pluralistic ethos. However, it expressed deep distress that fringe elements in several states allegedly engaged in acts of intimidation, vandalism of Christmas decorations, and disruptions around places of worship during the same festive period.

Describing the incidents as “nefarious” which disrupt communal harmony, the NPP Nagaland stated that such actions tarnish country’s image by projecting an image contrary to India’s constitutional values, civilization ethos and democratic credentials.

The party underscored that India, as the world’s largest democracy, is constitutionally bound to uphold secularism, equality, and the fundamental right of every citizen to practice and celebrate their faith without fear. Any situation in which communities feel insecure during religious observances demands immediate attention and firm corrective action, it stated.

While respecting democratic institutions and law-enforcement agencies, NPP Nagaland State called to examine whether administrative lapses or delayed responses are allowing isolated incidents to escalate and create an atmosphere of fear and psychological distress. Public confidence depends not merely on assurances, but on visible, timely, and impartial action, it warned.

It further stated that the Prime Minister’s widely articulated vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” must be reflected not only in words and symbolism, but in timely and effective action on the ground. “Failure to curb such activities decisively risks eroding public trust and undermining the very essence of inclusive governance,” the party cautioned.

“No individual or group has the authority to interfere with lawful religious or cultural practices. The responsibility to ensure safety, dignity, and equal protection rests squarely with the State and must be exercised without bias,” the party said.

NPP Nagaland State urged the Union and State authorities to act decisively, prevent further escalation, ensure accountability, and reaffirm—through concrete action—India’s unwavering commitment to constitutional values, pluralism, inclusivity, and the rule of law.
