The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, has issued an four-day weather advisory forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall across the state from August 27 to August 30.

According to the update, several districts — Kohima, Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Peren, Phek, Shamator, Tseminyu, Tuensang, and Wokha — are expected to experience moderate intermittent rain on August 30.

In an advisory issued by Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer, NSDMA, the NSDMA cautioned that lowland and foothill areas, particularly Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit, and Tuli, are highly vulnerable to waterlogging and flash floods due to heavy precipitation in the hilly regions.

To minimize risks, the NSDMA urged the public to adopt precautionary measures, including:

  • Keeping valuable documents and items in safe lockers.
  • Evacuating low-lying areas if advised by authorities.
  • Remaining alert to possible gas leaks and open drain holes.
  • Avoiding food or water contaminated by floodwaters.
  • Disconnecting electrical appliances and moving them above ground level.
  • Boiling or chlorinating drinking water.
  • Avoiding entry into floodwaters or driving through inundated areas.

The NSDMA also directed all District Disaster Management Authorities and concerned line departments to remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property during this period of heightened risk.

It urged the public to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period.

For emergencies, citizens have been advised to contact the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) at the toll-free number 1070.
