The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has demanded for the immediate termination of Professor Sarat Chandra Yenisetti, Department of Zoology, Nagaland University, Lumami who was accused of physically assaulting a female colleague.

On November 25, 2024, during official working hours, Professor Yenisetti was involved in an incident where he verbally abused a group of postgraduate students using highly offensive and degrading language. In addition, he physically assaulted a female Assistant Professor from the same department.

In a letter to the Vice Chancellor of NU and the Governor of Nagaland, the Federation stated that such conduct is a direct violation of institutional values and ethics, as well as a grave affront to human dignity and professional standards.

“This incident, unfortunately, is not an isolated occurrence. Numerous reports have been reported indicating that Professor Yenisetti has a history of unprofessional and unethical behavior. His repeated acts of intimidation, verbal abuse, and disregard for the safety of students and faculty have created an atmosphere of fear and hostility within the department. This toxic environment has severely compromised the mental and physical well-being of individuals associated with the institution,” stated the NSF.

The Federation expressed that such actions not only harm the victims but also tarnish the reputation of Nagaland University, and erodes the trust and confidence of students, faculty, and stakeholders in the university’s ability to provide a safe and nurturing environment for academic and professional growth.

In view of these grave concerns, the NSF demanded the administration for immediate and decisive action by terminating Professor Yenisetti’s employment with Nagaland University within three days time. Failure to address the demand within the stipulated period from the date of this communique will invite necessary measures from the office of the Naga Students’ Federation, the Federation cautioned.

“A firm response is necessary to uphold the principles of justice and fairness and to reinforce the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe and dignified academic environment. Furthermore, we recommend that the university administration adopt stringent policies and mechanisms to prevent such incidents in the future. Ensuring a secure and respectful atmosphere on campus is critical for fostering intellectual growth and mutual respect among students and faculty alike,” it asserted.

Affirming its mission to safeguard the rights and welfare of the university community, the Federation noted that it will closely monitor the steps taken in response to its representation, as well as prompt and appropriate action from the authorities concerned.
