The Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC), on its second day of visitations, examined the West Police Station, Women’s Police Station, and District Police Station. The delegation, led by Chairperson Songkhumpchung Serto, Justice of NSHRC, along with NSHRC member R. Nzanbemo Lotha and Limanenla, NSC Secretary, conducted these visits, DIPR informed
During their inspection of the sub-jail, concerns were raised about the need for an overhead tank for improved bathroom facilities and the necessity for a dedicated dining hall. The delegation emphasized the importance of segregating inmates and providing humane treatment to ensure they are treated as individuals rather than mere prisoners.
The team also highlighted the requirement for additional vehicles at the West Police Station to address emergencies effectively. Addressing the drug issue in Nagaland, the Chairperson noted that the state’s location as a gateway to the golden triangle makes it susceptible to drug-related problems.
The visit to the Women’s Police Department revealed a high number of missing reports, prompting the suggestion for CCTV cameras at transit points in Nagaland. Chairman Serto concluded the visit by affirming the NSHRC’s commitment to improving jail facilities, enhancing police stations, and safeguarding individuals’ human rights.
