NSHRC, NU conduct awareness program on ‘Human Rights and Role of Human Rights Commission in its Better Protection’

Lumami: Commission visits GPS and Health and Wellness Centre, interacts with staff

The Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) in collaboration with Nagaland University organised an awareness program on “Human Rights and the Role of Human Rights Commission in its Better Protection” on 16th of May 2024 at Ihoshe Kinnimi Hall, Nagaland University, Lumami, DIPR has informed.

During the meeting, the team, led by Justice Songkhupchung Serto, Chairperson, Nagaland State Human Rights Commission and accompanied by Member and Secretary NSHRC, explained the functions of the Commission such as intervening in any proceeding involving any allegation of violation of human rights pending before a court, with the approval of such court.

The team also explained that the Commission reviews the safe guard provided by the Constitution or any law for the time being in force for the protection of human rights. It also undertakes and promotes research in the field of human rights and spreads human rights literacy among various sections of society and promotes awareness of the safeguard available for the protection of this right through publications, the media and other available means. The NSHRC team also elaborated on the powers relating to inquiries.

Earlier welcome address was delivered by Prof. H. John Sema, Department of Political Science, followed by the vote of thanks by Dr. Abemo, Registrar, Nagaland University.

The Commission also visited Government Primary School and Health and Wellness Centre and interacted with the staff.
