NU organises Cyber Security Awareness; DGP Nagaland emphasizes need for robust cyber security infrastructure in State

Lumami: DGP expresses hope that NU and State Govt would collaborate to advance cyber security efforts

The Nagaland University, Lumami, organized a one-day Cyber Security Awareness program on August 21, 2024. The event was held in a blended format, with Rupin Sharma (IPS), DGP of Nagaland, serving as the Chief Guest, the University informed.

In his address, DGP Sharma discussed the evolution from traditional methods to the Information Technology era, which has simplified tasks and improved accessibility. However, he warned of the associated risks, such as the misuse of personal data, and stressed the importance of online privacy. He advised participants to be wary of online scams, such as false cash prize offers, to avoid financial loss.

Regarding Cyber Security in Nagaland, Sharma highlighted the need for a robust cyber security infrastructure and stressed that the state must enhance its capabilities to address cyber threats. He also outlined various initiatives from both the Indian and state governments, including the establishment of Cyber Commandos for the police and the creation of Cyber Volunteers—civilians who can assist law enforcement. Sharma concluded by expressing hope that the University would collaborate with the state government to advance cyber security efforts.

Resource person Rishamo Philip Yanthan, Deputy SP, Mokokchung and former CBI Investigative Officer, provided practical advice on maintaining cyber safety, such as using unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, securing devices, avoiding unnecessary apps, and being cautious with public Wi-Fi. He assured attendees that following these guidelines could enhance their cyber security skills.

Prof. Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice Chancellor, NU, in his speech underscored that living in a technological age it is of paramount importance to spread awareness on cyber security issues.

Earlier, the program began with a Welcome Address by Kahoshe Sumi, DR (GAD), followed by an introduction to Cyber Security by Prof. Sujata Dash from the Department of IT, Nagaland University.

The event was chaired by Peter Ki, PRO of Nagaland University, and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ashish Kumar, Hindi Officer, Nagaland University.
