The Nagaland University organised the Valedictory Programme of Swachhata Pakhwada 2024 on 13th September 2024, at the Conference Hall of the Examination Building, Lumami. The event was graced by Prof. M.K. Sinha, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, as the Guest of Honour.
In his address, Prof. M.K. Sinha highlighted the economic impact of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. He noted that since its inception, the initiative has been a significant driver of the Indian economy, citing relevant statistics. The program has not only created job opportunities but has also contributed to the health and productivity of the workforce, enhancing overall economic performance, he added.
Prof. Sinha underscored that the cleanliness and sanitation efforts supported by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan have positively influenced Indian tourism, generating a revenue of 233.64 crore rupees. Additionally, the mission has led to reduced pollution and environmental degradation, and has lowered healthcare costs, he said.
Citing a World Bank estimate that poor sanitation costs India 6 percent of its GDP annually, Prof. Sinha affirmed that these losses have been mitigated by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. He concluded that the cumulative impact of the program includes increased income, job creation, and a general boost to the Indian economy.
Priyanka Sengar, Internal Audit Officer at Nagaland University, presided over the ceremony, while Prof. Wangshimenla Jamir, Chairperson of the Swachhata Committee 2024, delivered the Introductory Speech.
Prof. Jamir emphasized the Swachhata Pakhwada’s mission to raise awareness about the significance of environmental cleanliness. She also detailed the various initiatives undertaken at Nagaland University, including the Swachhata Pledge, cleanliness drives across departments and offices, and competitions such as Best out of Waste and Clean Your Neighbourhood (Before-After Photographs).
The winners of the various competitions were announced by Peter Ki, PRO of Nagaland University. The event, attended by statutory officers, faculty, administrative staff, and students, concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Rumi Dhar from the Department of Law, Nagaland University.
