Observing National Sports Day (Athletics Meet 2023)

Kohima:National Sports Day provided a platform to showcase the talents and potential of Indian athletes representing diverse sports disciplines

The Youth Resources & Sports Department, Government of Nagaland, orchestrated the National Sports Day (Athletics Meet 2023) with enthusiasm at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima. The event, which took place on August 25th, 2023, was announced to commence by Kethosituo Sekhose, the Director of Youth Resources & Sports.

Sekhose highlighted the significance of National Sports Day, celebrated on August 29th each year to honor the birth anniversary of the Indian hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand. The occasion underscores the ‘Fit India’ theme, promoting engagement in sports for holistic physical and mental well-being. Notably, the event witnessed the participation of students from different schools, spanning classes 8 to 10, fostering a sense of community and sportsmanship. Sekhose expressed optimism for even greater school involvement in subsequent events.

The event’s primary objective was to inspire young individuals to embrace sports as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. It provided a platform to showcase the talents and potential of Indian athletes representing diverse sports disciplines. National Sports Day was also an opportunity to pay homage to athletes, coaches, and administrators who have made substantial contributions to the development of Indian sports.

The participating schools included G. Rio Higher Secondary School, Loyala Higher Secondary School, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Grace Higher Secondary School, Bethel Higher Secondary School, Mt. Hermon Higher Secondary School, and Dainty Buds Higher Secondary School.
