Organisations condemn extortion demand from recipient of Governor’s Award by alleged NSCN (Khango)

Ao Kaketshir Mungdang

The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) condemned the act of extortion and harassment at Aolemba Longkumer, a bonafide member of the Ao community, on 16 December 2024 by alleged NSCN (K) Khango group. “It is deeply disturbing that such actions are perpetrated by those who claim to uphold Naga identity and rights, yet stoop to such illegal and morally indefensible practices,” the AKM stated in a press release.

AKM Vice President Onenpong and Asst. General Secretary Bangjungkaba Imchen stated that the such acts of intimidation on the President of India awardee and recipient of the Governor’s Award, who has tirelessly worked to uplift society, is being subjected to harassment by criminal elements, “undermine the hard work and integrity of honest citizens, shaking public confidence in the rule of law.”

The Union also highlighted the alarming rise in extortion cases across Nagaland and said that if left unchecked, such criminal practices could escalate into a broader crisis of law and order, The AKM demanded that the State Government take decisive action to root out these unlawful activities and hold the perpetrators accountable under the law. It is imperative that such organized criminal networks be dismantled to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

Calling on the government to fulfill its responsibility of safeguard the lives and livelihoods of the people, it stated that the failure to act decisively against these acts of extortion and intimidation will only embolden criminal groups, jeopardizing the peace and stability of Nagaland. The AKM also demanded the perpetrators of the heinous crime be arrested and prosecuted without delay.

Ao Lanur Telongjem

The Ao Lanur Telongjem (ALT) has condemned the extortion demand of ₹50 lakh allegedly by the NSCN (Khango) group upon Aolemba Longkumer, Chairman of the Country Craft Development Society on 16 December 2024.

In a press release, the organisation stated that Longkumer, recipient of President’s Award and also the Governor’s Award, is a bona-fide Ao Naga citizen and a law-abiding man “who made his mark through his God given talents and sheer diligence”.

“If such person like Aolemba is harassed in such a degrading manner by the NSCN (Khango), then it would discourage the future Naga innovators and entrepreneurs and put Nagaland on a backslide in every field,” ALT Convener Imnaonen Pongen and Co-convener Tiatemsu Longchar stated.

Extending solidarity to Chumukedima Ao Lanur Telongjem (CALT) and endorsing the FIR lodged at Chumukedima Police Station on 17 December 2024, the ALT urges the law enforcing agencies to take the matter with utmost seriousness and expedite the case and arrest the culprits at the earliest.

Furthermore, the ALT called on the Naga society, especially the youths, “to introspect deeply on the prevailing scourge of extortion and intimation perpetuated by the different underground groups.” It also said that it will be closely monitoring the case till the end.

Chümoukedima Town Youth Organisation

Condemning the extortion demand, the Chümoukedima Town Youth Organisation (CTYO) said that the notice issued by NSCN (Khango) is a blatant attempt to intimidate and exploit a law-abiding citizen Aolemba Longkumer. “This brazen and illegal act is a direct affront to the safety and security of our community and undermines the peaceful coexistence we strive to maintain,” CTYO President Avi Makritsu and General Secretary Letsol Thakro stated in a press release.

CTYO reiterated the 1993 resolution of the Angami Public Organisation (APO) on “One Government, One Tax,” and subsequent directives by the Angami Youth Organisation (AYO), which firmly instruct all workers of various Naga Political Groups (NPGs) to refrain from illegal activities within Angami jurisdiction. It urged the law enforcement authorities to act swiftly and decisively by apprehending the culprits responsible for this criminal act and ensuring they face befitting punishment.

Further, the Organisation called on the Ceasefire Monitoring Group (CFMIG)/Ceasefire Supervisory Board (CFSB) and its agencies to strictly enforce the ceasefire ground rules, ensuring that cadres abide by the agreed guidelines.

Longsa Village Council and Longsa senso Mungdang

The Longsa Village Council of Mokokchung District and its entire citizens (Longsa Senso Mungdang) questioned why no positive progress has been made by the investigating agency after 7 days since the extortion demand has been made. The Council claimed that Longkumer was compelled to sign the undertaking “after more than an hour of arguments as he was with his minor Child and aged old parents” and that the incident was clearly visible in the CCTV coverage.

“It is beyond our comprehension how long the innocent citizen of the state can remain under the threat of so called national workers,” LVC Chairman Akangjungshi Tatar and LSM President Noklenjungba Tatar stated.

Condemning the barbaric act in its strongest term, the Longsa Village Council urged the Nagaland Police to act sincerely, arrest the culprits and disclose the identity of the accused public.
