Oriental College organises awareness program on Substance Use Disorder

The Internal Quality Assurance cell (IQAC), Oriental College in collaboration with Social Welfare Department organised an awareness program for Substance Use Disorder on February 26.

The awareness program was chaired by Mhabeni Kikon, Assistant coordinator, IQAC- Oriental College.

Ketho Angami, President, ARK Foundation gave the introduction to substance abuse- importance of primary prevention. He highlighted  about how addiction is affecting society in various forms. “It’s common that 13-14 years are getting into addiction over recent years. Under a small research there are 51 Male users of drug and 52  female users,” stated the press release issued by the College. Angami also shared concerns on how youngsters in Nagaland are introduced to addiction at a very young age through exploitation of alcohol, smoking, gutkhas, narcotic drugs. Ignorance and curiosity leads into addiction, he added.

Llato Kiba, recovering drug user delivered his experience on the harmful effects of drug use. Kiba, in his testimony, talked about how his early youth started as a promising student however because of substance abuse at a very young age lead to the loss of concentration, lack of sleep, restlessness, thefts, involving in fights, imprisonment. All these led him to withdraw himself from the society.

A questionnaire opportunity was open to all the students. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Zahebeituo Kire, Senior Welfare Inspector, Social Welfare Department, Kohima.
